MUMBAI .- AstaGuru is set to unveil a treasure trove of rare and previously unseen artworks in its upcoming 'Iconic Masters' Auction. This finally curated collection of 190 lots is a veritable journey through significant decades of Modern Indian Art and feature works by revered names who shaped the nation's artistic narrative. What sets this catalogue apart is its exceptional inclusion of not only the iconic, signature style pieces by these maestros but also a captivating array of artworks that represent a departure from their customary themes and mediums. Scheduled to be held on October 27-28, 2023, the ‘Iconic Masters’ Auction offers an exceptional opportunity for collectors to acquire works from the multifaceted oeuvre of India’s iconic modernists.

The upcoming auction will showcase a host of unique works by artist S. H. Raza. Lot no. 126, titled ‘Jagrat,’ was executed in the year 2004 and stands as a shining example of his exploration of the ‘Bindu,’ an iconic and unifying element in his body of work. This large-scale acrylic on canvas work is expected to be acquired for INR 5,00,00,000 - 7,00,00,000. A beautiful example of Raza landscapes from the early phase of his career, lot no. 31, is estimated to sell at INR 1,20,00,000 - 11,60,00,000. Six more works by the artist will be showcased in the auction.

Lot no. 190 is a sublime work by artist Jehangir Sabavala titled ‘The Sky Like A Burning Furnace,’ executed in the year 1968 and said to be inspired by his love for the sunsets of the town of Mahabaleshwar. The oil on canvas creation is estimated to be acquired at INR 3,50,00,000 - 4,50,00,000.

Also a highlight of the auction is a work by old master Abdur Rahman Chughtai, best known for his unique visual language, representative of South Asian culture, that fused many of his influences including Art Nouveau, Mughal art, traditional miniature paintings and Islamic art. The watercolour on card work, lot no. 18, is offered with an estimate of 30,00,000 - 40,00,000.

Another rare work, lot no. 1, is a painting by renowned scientist Homi Jehangir Bhabha. Titled ‘Dove Sono I Belli Momenti,’ the 1938 oil on canvas work was inspired by the creations of Italian Renaissance master El Greco. This painting is estimated to sell at INR 10,00,000 - 15,00,000.

The auction also shines a light on the diverse artistic inspiration of seminal artist M.F Husain. Lot no. 76 is an untitled oil on canvas work from the year 1976. It is a grand example of his special affinity for the national animal of the country - the tiger. Much like his other works depicting animals, the presented lot too sees the tiger in motion. It is expected to be acquired at INR 2,00,00,000 - 3,00,00,000. Lot no. 105 is a work from his famous ‘Mother Teresa’ series, which held a special place in his heart.

Executed in 1990 with watercolour on paper, it is estimated to sell at INR 2,00,00,000 - 3,00,00,000. Lot no. 162 is an untitled acrylic on canvas painting offered with an estimate of INR 1,50,00,000 - 2,00,00,000. Lot no. 172, untied ( Mehndi), portrays two female figures seated in a courtyard with trees in the background. The painting derives its name from the central focus of the artwork - the embellished hands of the figures. It is expected to sell at INR 80,00,000 - 1,20,00,000. More works by Husain in distinct mediums, including, pen and pencil on paper, acrylic on leather, mixed media on fabric, as well as acrylic on woodcut is also offered in the auction.

Lot no. 98 titled ‘A Season of Watermelons,’ is a grand scale work by Krishen Khanna. In this work, he depicts the onset of summer, which is reflected through the blazing colour composition. This work is offered with an estimate of INR 80,00,000 - 1,20,00,000. Three works in varied mediums based on his famous theme of Bandwallahs will also be on offer.

Lot no. 95 is a poignant abstract landscape painting from the oeuvre of artist Ram Kumar. Executed with oil on canvas in 1965, it is expected to sell at INR 70,00,000 - 90,00,000.

Four works by artist K.H. Ara, including two still life, one nude, and a portrait painting will also be showcased.

Lot no. 68 is an important creation by influential sculptor Himmat Shah. His unique artistic vision, distinct techniques and modernist approach to creating impressive abstract sculptures earned the sculptor recognition globally. It is offered with an estimate of INR 25,00,000 - 30,00,000.

The auction will also showcase a range of sculptural creations by artists, including Himmat Shah, Somenath Hore, P.V. Janakiram, S. Nandagopal, Prodosh Das Gupta, Ram Kumar, Thota Vaikuntam, Sarbari Roy Chowdhury, S. Dhanpal, B. Vithal, K. Laxma Goud, and Jogen Chowdhury, Chintamoni Kar, and Krishen Khanna.

Works by several women artists Amrita Sher-Gil, Arpana Caur, Anjolie Ela Menon, Jaya Appasamy, Zarina Hashmi, will also be showcased in the upcoming auction.
