ALAMEDA, CA.- Michaans Auctions welcomed May with the monthly Gallery Auction on Friday, May 19th. Many unusual lots could be found at Fridays auction, such as Edith Baretto Stevens Parsons Figural Bronze Fountain; an oil painting by VYTAUTAS KASIULIS; as well as a Van Cleef & Arpels Ruby, Enamel, Diamond, 18k Yellow Gold Terrier Brooch.
Mays Furniture and Decorative art section exploded early with the silver section achieving a 98% sell thru rate. Next the Edith Baretto Stevens Parsons Figural Bronze Fountain stole the show fetching $7,995. This section was rounded out by an extraordinary lot of Two Volumes of Chinese Art History Blacker books that sold for $2,460.
May provided no shortage of sought-after fine art, offering pieces like lot 174, an Illustration for the book "Green Mansions" by William Henry Hudson by MIGUEL COVARRUBIAS (Mexican, 1904-1957) selling for $6,765. Then a strong showing from the artist, VYTAUTAS KASIULIS (Lithuanian, 1918-1995). His Floral Arrangement sold for $3,997 and the Musician and Woman sold for $1,476. Also, Edgar Alwin Payne was popular with his sublime Coastal Landscape that sold for well over the high estimate for $3,250.
Gold was best of show in the jewelry section of the auction. Starting off with a collection of Nine 18k Yellow Gold Bangles selling for $6,150. Barking his way to the front of the line was a Van Cleef & Arpels Ruby, Enamel, Diamond, 18k Yellow Gold Terrier Brooch which sold for $7,995. The US Gold Coin, 24k Yellow Pendant
Necklace drove a lot of interest and sold for $7,380. Of course, and always, there was an amazing Diamond, Platinum Ring that sold for $6,150.
Concluding Fridays auction was a selection of Asian art in an array of genres including ceramics, carvings, furniture, and silk and painted panels. Topping the charts was a Chinese Marble Inlay Top Partners Desk fetching $5,227. An impressive Pair of Large Japanese Imari Porcelain Vases were turning heads to the tune of $4,612. Last but not least, were a Collection of Asian Bronze Bowls and a Cloisonne Vase selling for $2,460.
Michaans Luxury Auction proved to be very impressive indeed. The Bosendorfer Concert Grand Piano garnered a lot of interest online and on the phones. One of the phone bidders won out to the tune of $46,125. Also, showing up as a star lot was the McKenzie Childs Chicken Palace Jewelry Chest coming in at an impressive
$9,840. A remarkable Buccellati Sterling Silver Soup Tureen was closely watched on LiveAuctioneers and Michaans Live and eventually fetched $6,765. Always a crowd pleaser, Dale Chihulys beautifully blown art. His Macchia Bowl Basket sold for $5,227. Shining in the couture section was a gorgeous Neiman Marcus, Full length Blonde Sable Coat that sold for $3,382.
