NEW YORK, NY.- Venus Over Manhattan announced today that it will open its newest location at 39 Great Jones Street. The Downtown expansion comes almost exactly a year after opening its current home just steps away at 55 Great Jones Street. The new 3,000 square foot space will complement the gallerys ongoing programing, and will be inaugurated on May 6, 2023 with a solo exhibition of work by Richard Mayhew.
Now located at both 39 and 55 Great Jones Street, the gallery expands upon its downtown presence in the NoHo neighborhood. This move will allow the gallery to centralize operations and simultaneously present multiple aspects of its wide-ranging program in a cohesive viewing experience.
The inaugural exhibition, Natural Order, marks the gallerys debut showing of Richard Mayhew. Featuring more than twenty works, the exhibition includes key loans from the collections of important supporters of Mayhews practice.
Mayhew, the only living member of the storied Spiral Group, has achieved wide renown for his lurid, improvisational paintings which render emotional visions of the American landscape. An artist of African American and Native American descent, Mayhew draws heavily on his relationship to his dual ancestry in his work, creating a unique visual language that explores the intersection of nature, culture, memory, and identity. Now 99 years old, May- hew continues to make work that pushes the category of landscape to the verge of total abstraction, foregoing the trappings of representation in pursuit of pure color.
About the move, gallery founder Adam Lindemann states: We look forward to opening our landmark exhibition with Richard Mayhewan artist just beginning to receive the attention hes so long deservedand expanding our presence downtown, where we hope to build a more comprehensive experience for the artists and exhibitions we continue to present.
