GLEN COVE, NY.- An extremely rare two volume set of books by Thomas Martyn (1760-1816) titled "The Universal Conchologist is making an appearance at
Roland Auctions NY Saturday, February 4th Multi-Estates Auction.
Begun in 1784, The Universal Conchologist the book took several years to produce and after one failed attempt a second edition was published to wide acclaim, mainly composed of hand-coloured engravings, it was intended to be a guide to all known shells. The book is rumored to have been in the possession of the legendary Captain Cook himself at one time.

In the Asian arena, Roland will present an exquisite Kyohei Fujita (Japanese, 1921-2004): Japanese Art Glass Box in a Case, "maitre verrier" covered box in a case, 1990's, signed "Green Glass Mountain" with Perspex display box. Provenance: From the Estate of Nina Moinester. Both contemporary yet deeply rooted in Japanese decorative arts tradition, Kyohei Fujita was without doubt the most renowned contemporary glass artist in Japan. Estimate $2,500-$3,500, along with a Chinese Blanc De Chine Porcelain Figural Group, centered with an immortal figure holding a Ruyi scepter, surrounded by attendant figures and a phoenix, an arched branch with peaches provides shelter over swirling clouds. [12" H x 10 3/4" W x 5 1/4" D]. Estimate $2,000-$3,000. In addition, Roland has a pair of Carved Stone Dvarapala Guardians, similar to a pair in the Sidoarjo Museum in Java.
