MISSOULA, MONT.- The
Missoula Art Museum is presenting works by 20 artists in their exhibition, Omnipresent: Photographs from the MAM Collection. For the first time, the Museum surveys photographs collected since 1975. The exhibit brings together local artists such as the late Stan Healy, Kristi Hager, Marcy James, Lauren Grabelle, Chris Autio, Jill Brody, and David Spear, and nationally known artists, such as UM alumna Holly Andres, Imogen Cunningham, and Lee Friedlander.
With the advent of the iPhone and social media, the photographic image is omnipresent in our daily lives. MAMs new exhibit continues the invigorating conversation around the medium. We live in a world that is obsessed with photo imageswe take pictures of everything, all the time. When you walk into the gallery, the photographs are immediately accessible. The juxtaposition of different artistic styles in this show encourages visitors to slow down. Viewing photographs on the wall can be much more enriching than swiping through a slideshow on your phone, associate curator John Calsbeek said.
From compact still-life meditations on pliers and wrenches to a 20-piece installation of altered vintage portraits, the photographs selected for Omnipresent range in genre, style, and scale, demonstrating the diverse possibilities of the form and the expansive curiosity of the artists. A number of the exhibited works were gifted to MAM by the artists. Omnipresent: Photographs from the MAM Collection is on view through Feb. 11, 2023.
Founded in 1975 and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1987, MAM is emerging as the leading contemporary art museum in the Intermountain West.
