DENVER, CO.- Hindman will look to continue to engage a thriving Western Art market as it presents its final Western & Contemporary Native American Art sale of 2022 next week. The November 1st auction features fine art created from the height of American westward expansion through the present, including works by some of the most desirable artists in the category. Works from masters of the traditional Western form, like Joseph Henry Sharp, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, and Adolf Alexander Weinman will appear alongside contemporary artists Martin Grelle, G. Russell Case, Clyde Aspevig, Howard Post, Ed Mell and Louisa McElwain. Hindman is proud to once again include an impressive session of Modern and Contemporary Native American fine art, including works by Fritz Scholder, Earl Biss, Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, David Bradley, and others who are quickly becoming some of the most coveted artists in the category.
Property in the sale was sourced from across Hindmans national network and features works from a number of important estates, private collections, and institutions, including property being sold to benefit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming.
The Historic West: The Works of Joseph Henry Sharp and Others Notable Artists
Headlining the auction are a trio of oil paintings by one of the most influential painters of the classic, Western style, Joseph Henry Sharp (American, 1859-1953). The session will feature Where the Deer Come (lot 70), estimated at $80,000 to $120,000. A quintessential Sharp scene, the oil on board depicts a Native American hunter gazing into a tree line on a beautiful fall day. The classic fireside scene, Brings the Flowers and Hunting Son (lot 69), estimated at $70,000 to $90,000, and a landscape of the south fork of the Hondo Canyon in New Mexico (lot 71) estimated at $30,000 and $50,000, round out the trio for the sale.
The auction will also feature other important historic Western works, including a landscape by Albert Bierstadt (lot 15), The Buck Overtaken (lot 142) by Frederic Remington, an exquisite casting of Chief Blackbird by Adolph Alexander Weinman (lot 98), and a classic canyon watercolor by Gerard Curtis Delano. The sale will also showcase a session of New Mexico Transcendentalist works by Emil Bisttram and Raymond Jonson as well as a selection of other important Southwestern regionalists including William Sanderson, Gene Kloss and Elliot Torey.
The Modern West: Martin Grelle, G. Russell Case and More
For collectors seeking modern depictions of classic Western scenery, the November auction will feature works by artists including Martin Grelle, G. Russell Case, Clyde Aspevig, Dave McGary, Howard Post, Louisa McElwain, Kim Douglas Wiggins, Nelson Boren, Robert Daughters, Ed Mell, and Theodore Waddell.
The auction will also feature a strong selection of wildlife art, led by paintings by David Shepherd, a renowned British artist and passionate conservationist.
The Contemporary Western Voice
The Modern and Contemporary Native American Art fine art section of the auction once again features an extraordinary selection of 11 works by Fritz Scholder (Luiseño, 1937-2005), an artist with whom Hindman has experienced tremendous success over the past several years, setting and subsequently breaking the auction record for the artist several times. The top lot by Scholder is expected to be an acrylic on canvas entitled Horse and Rider (lot 199), estimated at $80,000 120,000.
Other notable contemporary Native American artists featured in the auction include John Nieto, Earl Biss, Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, Dan Namingha, Allan Houser, David Bradley and a collaborative piece by Tammy Garcia and Preston Singletary.
Online Auction on November 2
On November 2, Hindman will also present a timed online auction of Western Art & Contemporary Native American Art. Bidders will have the opportunity to bid on works by artists, including Scott Christensen, Bob Scriver, Ross Stefan, Oleg Stavrowsky, Edward Borein, Terry Duen Kelsey, Billy Schenck, Gib Singleton, Randy Lee White and Kevin Red Star.
