OAKLAND, CALIF.- Clars fine art section featured this monumental work by Nathan Oliveira (American, 1928-2010) from the series commissioned by Stanford University in the 1990s titled, Wing-Owl (1996), caught the eye of a private collector and outperformed its estimate selling for $28,750. This painting was also featured in the December 1999 issue of Architectural Digest magazine. A rare suite of prints by Richard Diebenkorn (American, 1922-1993) titled, "Six Soft Ground Etchings, sold for an impressive $16,250. This was the first time the complete set was offered at auction.
In addition to the exciting sale of prints and oil on canvas, Clars October auction saw auction success from European and Japanese artists. These included two screenprints by, Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, b. 1929), "A Pumpkin YB-D," 2004 and "Pumpkin (RYSQ)," 1998, each sold for $12,700, Alicia Penalba (Argentine, 1913-1982), Equisse no. 8 bronze sculpture sold for $12,065, and a lovely piece by French artist Andre Eugene Dauchezs (French, 1870-1943), Landscape with Pine Trees sold for $10,625.
The Asian section always a draw for collectors sold Chinese blue and white dishes, each featuring five stylized lotus and scrolling foliage, with several bearing a Guangxu mark, sold for $4,550 and a pair of beautifully carved hardwood armchairs sold for $5,000.
A featured jewelry highlight was lot 2105A, a leaf form eighteen karat gold brooch from Buccellati, which was sold for $1,680, more than three times the estimate; lot 2000, an antique diamond and platinum-topped fourteen karat gold brooch, which realized $2,080. Over 11% of the bidders in the jewelry portion of the sale were first time registrants, announcing to us that holiday buying is right around the corner.
