Are football shirts becoming works of art?

Football and art have always been close together. With fashion a big thing in the footballing world from football shirts worn by the players to what fans wear on the terraces. However, in this article, we will focus on the shirts released by football clubs and with an abundance to choose from given sides release three to four new shirts every single year clubs how to be more inventive than they used to and rely on sporting companies to produce some of the most standout kits available.

Figuring out who will produce the best shirt is hard much harder than betting in the UK as you can find the UK's #1 Site for all Betting Offers quite easily. When it comes to art it is obviously quite subjective and shirts are no different in that regard. You either love them or hate them; much like marmite.

Traditional football shirts

Football shirts way back when used to be fairly simple. They were either all the same colour, striped or hooped. There was not much room for movement but during the 1980s and 90s, there was a massive change in kits particularly when it came away shirts because clubs did not want to mess with the home kit formula too much.

The change

With fashion as a whole becoming more expressive and brighter, the art world was also experiencing a similar trend. Yet the brighter the design, the more interesting the kit became to fans of that side or even from rival sides.

It even inspires players to get involved to design their own kit. In particular, the Mexican goalkeeper Jorge Campos teamed up with Puma and created several kits that were bright and close to pop art if anything; much like the work of Andy Warhol, There was no missing Campos when he arrived on the pitch.

What standout kits are close to art?

There are too many for this list that could be hung up in the Louvre but here is a list of some of the most fantastic shirts that an artist would consider hanging up on their wall.

1. Nigeria 2018 Home Kit
2. Ajax 2021-22 Third Kit
3. Arsenal 1991-92 Away Shirt
4. Netherlands 1988 Home Shirt
5. Denmark 1986 Home Shirt
6. Jamaica 2021-22 Away Shirt
7. West Germany 1988 Home Shirt
8. Algeria 2022/23 Training Top

All these kits feature beautiful pattern work and standout colours that make your eyes pop.

However, examples such as the 1998 Mexico World Cup shirt with a traditional Mexican Aztec face on it, Ferro Carril Oeste Goalkeeper shirt depicting Homer Simpson disappearing into a bush, Pescara’s 2020 shirt with a cartoon Dolphin jumping through a rainbow or Bedale AFC's jersey having sausage and peas on it!

Football shirts are certainly a canvas for many artists and the football shirts business is no cheap game.

The role of Classic Football Shirts

It is quite fashionable to be seen sporting older shirts and the jazzier the better in many cases. This spurred the company Classic Football Shirts to get involved and make their own concept shirts. Joining up with clubs and even bands as they look to make fantastic shirts with an array of colours.
