LONDON.- Bonhams has appointed Marcel Brouwer as International Specialist of Modern Decorative Art & Design in Europe with immediate effect (September 2022). He will be based in the Netherlands.
Marcel will play a key role in the International Design department, helping the Paris team to build Design sales, and also supporting the teams in London, New York, and Brussels. He will work closely with our colleagues in Scandinavia to develop synergies across the Bonhams network.
Born in the Netherlands, Marcel studied Art History in Utrecht and Leiden and in 1999 became Head of Sale of the 20th Century Decorative Arts & Design department at Christie's Amsterdam. In a senior specialist position, he had business getting responsibilities for the design sales in Paris and London. After leaving in 2009 he became an entrepreneur in the auction world. Marcel partnered with a franchise formula, organizing pop-up auctions and since 2014 he has been cooperating with Vendu Rotterdam where he set up their Design sales. He is one of the Design specialists at the national Dutch TV programme of Tussen Kunst & Kitsch, the Dutch equivalent of The Antiques Roadshow. He is fluent in Dutch, English and German.
Marcel Brouwer said: "Bonhams recent expansion has made it one of the most accessible auction houses in the world with strong local roots. The Bonhams network comprises a close-knit team which is a great strength in the Art World of the 21st Century where the need for hands on specialist advise is key. I am honoured to be joining one of the most entrepreneurial auctioneers anywhere and am looking forward to my first sale in Paris on 13 December.
Ben Walker, Bonhams Head of Modern Decorative Art and Design, said: I am delighted to welcome Marcel Brouwer to Bonhams. He has a wealth of international experience in the Fine and Decorative Arts fields and will be a hugely valuable addition to our growing team.
Bonhams has long led the field in 20th Century Decorative Arts and has been entrusted with major collections, including the Ruhlmann Art Deco pieces from the Viville-Yardley store in Paris, and The Artistry of Tiffany Sale, a collection which came from a prominent American home.
