SOUTHAMPTON, NY.- Christie’s announced summer 2022 season in the Hamptons, a series of selling exhibitions taking place in its gallery at 1 Pond Lane, in the heart of Southampton Village. This completely refurbished, 5,600-square-foot space, enclosed by floor-to-ceiling windows, occupies a beautiful Art Deco building that was once an auto repair shop. The gallery is fully open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, 11am – 6pm, and the works on view during the selling exhibitions will be available for immediate purchase. The season opens 27 May with NATURE ABSTRACTED: Vivian Springford, Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason. Upcoming exhibitions will include, The Great Indoors, a survey of interior views that will run 1 July to 31 July.

NATURE ABSTRACTED focuses on three American painters who embraced the power of color to express captivating patterns found in nature. Vivian Springford (1913-2003), was an abstract painter active in the New York art scene throughout the second half of the 20th century. Born into the male-dominated art world of Abstract Expressionism, yet inspired by sources as varied as Taoist calligraphy and the rhythm and beauty of nature, Springford created sophisticated kaleidoscopic pools of color. She favored source material from her surroundings – either in the organic formations found in nature or in the patterns of the stars and sky. Her highly vibrant and impressive pools of saturated color were an important contribution to the post-war canon. Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason were married in 1957, in Venice, and lived in Vermont and New York City. Kahn became known for his combination of Realism and Color Field painting. Mason developed her distinct response to Abstract Expressionist painting, modifying traditional techniques by diluting oil paint to the extent where it would flow as if it were watercolour. The two artists developed their abstracted visions of nature during some of the most radical shifts in 20th century art, working individually while sharing the same life and artistic journey.

Christie’s Southampton is located in a refurbished 5,600 square foot glass-front building, Christie’s new outpost in Southampton features fine art exhibitions. Conceived as a vibrant hub of activity for the local art-collecting community, the gallery hosts exhibitions, events, receptions and brand collaborations. Christie’s 2022 residency in Southampton follows on the success of the 2020 pop-up exhibition in the Hamptons, which drew hundreds of clients to a masterworks exhibitions of auction highlights over the extended 4th of July holiday, and last year’s exhibitions at the Southampton location. The gallery is located at 1 Pond Lane, in the heart of Southampton Village, close to the Southampton Arts Center and the Peter Marino Foundation.
