NEW YORK, NY.- Venus Over Manhattan announced today that the gallery now represents artist Sally Saul in New York. The gallery will present a solo show of the artists recent works in our downtown location in the Spring of 2023.
Sally Sauls ebullient ceramic sculptures of humans, fauna and flora are both humorous, subversive and teem with pathos for the natural world and all its creatures. In both her decades-long ceramic practice, as well as in her works on paper, Saul balances spirited whimsy with a subtle and insightful analysis of the human condition. While earning her MA in American Literature from San Francisco State University in the early 1970s Saul became acquainted with the Bay Area art scene and the artistic mores of the vibrant community who favored utilizing bright colors in their work and drawing subject matter from everyday life.
Like her husband, the artist Peter Saul, Sally Sauls work gestures to Pop Art, Surrealism and Expressionism but her work simultaneously operates in a wholly forthright and idiosyncratic style perhaps more evocative of Folk Art traditions. Notably, it was not until moving to Austin, Texas in 1981 that Saul enrolled in her first ceramics course and began work- ing in the medium that has come to dominate her practice in the intervening decades. The tactile quality of her sculptures emphasizes the textural nature of her technique. Both jocular and endearing Sauls work continues to inspire reflection on the most essential aspects of life and creation, celebrating and honoring the mundane and bucolic alike.
Born in New York in 1946, Sally Saul attended the University of Colorado, and San Francisco State University. Sauls work has been the subject of numerous solo presentations, including exhibitions at Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York; Redbud Gallery, Houston; and Trans Avant Garde Gallery, Austin. Her first survey exhibition Blue Hills, Yellow Tree opened at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, New York in May 2019. Additionally, her work is frequently featured in important group exhibitions, including recent presentations at Almine Rech Gallery, New York; Jack Hanley Gallery, New York; Nathalie Karg Gallery, New York, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield; Venus Over Los Angeles, Los Angeles; Cuevas/Tilleard Projects, New York; and CANADA, New York. In 2017, her New York solo debut, Sally Saul: Knit of Identity, was reviewed by The New York Times. Saul lives and works in Germantown, New York
