Hindman Auctions will present its third auction dedicated to Photographs, which will be highlighted by a striking selection of Annie Leibovitz portraits. The sale will also offer a dazzling selection of celebrity photography, by artists such as Yousuf Karsh, Philippe Halsman, William John Kennedy, Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston and Bruno Bernard (Bernard of Hollywood) that spotlight a range of luminaries from Hollywood to New York.
Annie Leibovitz
A compelling group of Annie Leibovitz photographs will be offered, highlighted by Alice in Wonderland for Vogue, (Viktor and Rolf with Natalia, Paris) (lot 86; estimate: $3,000-5,000), an image from an iconic 2003 fashion shoot. Leibovitz collaborated with Grace Coddington, former Vogue Creative Director, on this highly praised shoot. Her recent book titled Annie Leibovitz: Wonderland (Phaidon), was released in 2021 to much acclaim. With two exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth in New York and Hong Kong in the past three months, the collection of images presented here represents an opportunity for collectors to acquire at a pivotal moment in the artists career. Known for her stunning portraits and for capturing some of the most recognizable magazine covers in history, Leibovitz is one of the most decorated and celebrated photographers of all time.
Sally Mann
Sally Mann is renowned for her intimate photographs that examine themes such as family relationships, time and death, seen through her landscape photography. Works by Mann in this auction include Dog Scratches from 1991 (lot 46; estimate: $10,000-15,000) and Georgia Untitled (Dodd's Farm), from the series Georgia from 1996 (lot 45; estimate: $6,000 - $8,000).
Brett Weston
Highlights also include Brett Westons Twenty Photographs 1970-1977 (portfolio) (lot 38; estimate: $20,000-30,000). Weston is considered one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, taking inspiration from Western landscapes and natural forms. Lot 38 presents a unique opportunity for a collector to acquire a selection of his iconic images of landscapes, nudes and abstractions of nature and architecture.
