Another Place by Antony Gormley.

MERSEYSIDE BEACH, ENGLAND.- The installation of the spectacular sculpture Another Place by 'Angel of the North' artist Antony Gormley, on Crosby beach has begun. Another Place consists of 100 life size, cast-iron figures at different stages of rising out of the sand, all of them looking out to sea. It has previously been exhibited in Belgium, Norway and Germany where it has won huge critical acclaim. It has never previously been exhibited in the UK. Another place has been brought to Sefton through the efforts of the South Sefton Partnership. Support has also come from Sefton Council, Mersey Waterfront, Arts Council England and the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company.
Installation begins on the 13th June and will take approximately twenty days to site all 100 statues. The statues were arriving on site at Mariner's Road, next to Crosby Baths, this morning (13th June) and were being prepared for the site. The first lone statue was installed on the evening of the 13th June. During the installation there may be some disruption to access along the promenade for health and safety reasons.
A three metre pile will be drilled into the beach as a secure footing for each statue. On to this pile a plate will be welded onto which the statues are bolted. Each cast-iron statue weighs 650KG and stands 1.96 metres tall.
The Statues will be at Crosby from June 2005 until November 2006. Bringing Another Place to Crosby and Waterloo could put the area on the cultural map and be one of Sefton's major contributions in the run up to Liverpool's capital of Culture celebrations.
