DENVER, CO.- On May 6 and 7,
Hindman Auctions will present its Western Paintings and Sculpture auction, which will also include a Contemporary Native American Art session. The sale will feature several celebrated Western artists from the 18th and 19th centuries whose works capture the imagery and breathtaking landscapes of the American West as well as the vibrant mix of Native American and other Southwestern cultures. Session I of the sale on May 6 will feature 24 works being sold to benefit The Couse Foundation, Taos, New Mexico, and the construction of The Lunder Research Center in 2021 focusing on the Taos Society of Artists (TSA). The sale also features property from private collectors and estates as well as institutions including property being sold to benefit the art collections at the University of Denver, The Allan Houser Foundation, and the Grand Teton National Park Foundation, Jackson, Wyoming.

The artists featured played essential roles in shaping Western and Native American art, and we are also delighted to be partnering with The Couse Foundation this year.
Outstanding lots in the sale include works by founding members of the Taos Society of Artists, a visual arts organization that worked to grow the Taos art colony. These include Eanger Irving Couses painting Watching the Rising Trout (lot 180; estimate: $70,000-90,000) and Joseph Henry Sharps Eagle Star (lot 181; estimate: $25,000-35,000). Among the more modern works highlighted in the offering is abstract painter Louisa McElwains Anvil IV (lot 63; estimate: $20,000-30,000) and Andrew Michael Dasburgs Untitled (lot 58; estimate: $20,000-30,000).

Hindman generously offered to give us a spread in the auction catalogue and is allowing us to share our exciting story with a national audience.
Other standout works in the sale include Z.S. Liangs Sacred Light (lot 143; estimate: $15,000-$25,000) and Ed Mells Red Rock (lot 64; estimate: $15,000-25,000). Herman Wendelborg Hansens Cowboy Rider is another fantastic lot (lot 85; estimate: $15,000-25,000). Other highlights include works by Howard Post, Billy Schenck, Sandy Scott, Grant Speed, Vance Kirkland, Harry Jackson, Luke Frazier, Gene Kloss, Scott Christensen, George Hallmark, Merrill Mahaffey, Joseph Imhof, Ken Payne, and Doug Hyde.
Highlighting the Contemporary Native American Art session are works by Fritz Scholder, John Nieto, Dan Namingha, Kevin Red Star, Earl Biss, and Stan Natchez. Among other featured works is Fritz Scholders American Portrait #43 (lot 295; estimate: $18,000-24,000) and John Nietos Plains Warrior (lot 291; estimate: $7,000-9,000).
Bidding for the auction will begin on May 6 and 7 at 9am MT.
