Freeman's appoints Robin Nicholson as Art Museum Consultant
Robin Nicholson comes to Freeman’s with almost 35 years of experience in the art world.

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- Freeman’s announced the appointment of Robin Nicholson to the role of Art Museum Consultant. Robin will play a key role within Freeman’s Museum Services department, offering consultation on collections policies, deaccessioning strategies, acquisitions, and consignments.

Robin Nicholson comes to Freeman’s with almost 35 years of experience in the art world. From 1987 to 1992 he worked in the commercial gallery sector; he was corporate art curator of the Drambuie Collection from 1992 to 2006, and since 2006 has worked with American art museums. He served as Deputy Director for Art and Education and Director of Exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (2006–2014), and subsequently as Executive Director of the Frick Pittsburgh (2014–2018), and Telfair Museums, Savannah (2019–2020).

Robin holds an MA in the History of Art from the University of Cambridge and is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors and many other professional museum organizations. His diverse experience in all facets of both commercial and nonprofit arts institutions has aided his many professional successes. In 2005–2006, he worked closely with Freeman’s and Lyon & Turnbull on the sale of the Drambuie corporate collection, which, after an international tour and two-day sale, achieved eleven world records for Scottish art and a sell-through rate of almost 100%.

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Robin since we started out in the art world together in Edinburgh in the 80s,” says Alasdair Nichol, Freeman’s Chairman and Head of Fine Art. “I have followed his glittering career as he achieved one success after another, burnishing his reputation along the way. I could not be more delighted to now have the opportunity to work together. Robin brings a remarkable number of vital skillsets to Freeman’s, as well as an unrivaled knowledge of the museum world and an extensive number of contacts. I look forward to his contributing further to Freeman’s extraordinary growth and ongoing success in his new role as Art Museum Consultant.”
