How do snow guards work?

Snow guards are used to protect the house residents as well as the equipment from sudden snow migration from the roof of a building. At the moment, there are several types of snow guards. However, the most effective and demanded are tubular snow holders.

When a large volume of snow and ice accumulates on the roof, the metal roof snow guard hold keeps it from falling. This protects the blind area of the metal roof, the very roof panels, gutters, cars parked beneath, flower beds, etc. With a dangerous avalanche-like snow and ice melt, the metal roof can be damaged (scratches and defects form on the metal roofing and shingles tiles). With the use of snow retention systems, the entire mass of snow on the roof stays in place. So it is advisable to install snow guards to keep any type of snow from sliding down the metal roof surface in the winter time. An important note aside should be made about the installation of plastic snow fence structure. Installing such type of stoppers is not intended to retain or stop the precipitation mass, if the snow falls occur to be slightly more than regular. When the snow melts the water lubricates the remains of snow mass. This can cause the speedy slide and massive fall of all the roof snow. Also such retainer often begins to rip off on its own under the force of wind.

Certain types of snow guards release only small sheet of snow and ice run down the metal roofs pitch. These are tubular snow guards. The ice and snow mass is safe if it comes down from the roof in small portions. This very peculiarity of the system to pass small "portions" can reduce the snow load on the roof and supporting structures of the building as well as prevent massive damage to the surroundings.

Snow retention system. Operating principle

The principle of operation in this case is based on the special design. Thanks to it, avalanche-like crash of the of accumulated snow masses, but the smooth sliding of the sliced chunks or even melted water. Tubular snow holders make protect people from accidents and property from damage and destruction. No wonder, tubular snow holders have been installed on so many buildings and became an integral part of any roof project (snow guards for standing seam metal roof, metal tile, corrugated, flat roof and other metal panels).

Roof snow guards. Design features

Modern tubular snow holders have the universal style. They are produced in two different versions - oval and round holders, the pipe diameter does not exceed 1,5 inches. The set of tubular snow guard consists of a pair of pipes (each at least 8-10 feet long) and three supports based on high-strength steel. Even at the production stage, a special non-corrosion protection is applied to the surface of the tubular snow guard. This guarantees the durability.

They are installed on pitched roofs along the eaves in one or two rows. Horizontal pipes made of steel are mounted on vertical supports, the supports are secured on the roof (through the roof covering to the base). The supports allow to adjust the angle of inclination of the snow guards tubes. The tubular snow holders are universal - they are suitable for roofs with any slope. Snow guards are usually made of hot zinc coated steel, which is powder coated.

Tubular roof snow guards. Original material

Tubular snow guards for metal roofs come in any color to fit any style and can be made from different materials; aluminum, stainless steel, brass, etc. It should be remembered that copper tubular snow guards can only be used on copper roofs. Interaction with other metals caused a so-called galvanic effect, which destructs the roofing material.
