DALLAS, TX.- A sealed first edition Pokémon base set booster box could fetch $300,000 or more when it finds a new home in
Heritage Auctions' Comics & Comic Art Auction Nov. 19-21.
Still sealed in its original shrinkwrap, the Pokémon First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box (Wizards of the Coast, 1999) (estimate: $300,000) is considered the pinnacle of Pokémon box collecting Heritage Auctions sold a similar set in September 2020 for $198,000 and demand continues to increase, especially for sealed sets like this one.
"This is an unquestionable prize for any serious Pokémon collector," Heritage Auctions Assistant Comics & Comic Art Operations Supervisor Jesus Garcia said. "This set comes from a very low print run, and to find one that is still sealed and in such great condition is extraordinarily rare."
Pokémon was created in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast, in a set that featured 102 cards, most notably the Charizard; a PSA 10 first edition base set Charizard recently sold for more than $220,000 by itself. The offered set includes 36 booster packs, each of which contains 11 cards.
Also offered in the auction is an iconic piece in the Pokémon Trading Card Game: a Pokémon-e Skyridge Sealed Booster Box (Wizards of the Coast, 2003). With a pre-auction estimate of $30,000+, this is the last set that was produced by Wizards of the Coast and the last set in the e-card series, an assortment of cards that were compatible with the e-reader that was a peripheral for the Game Boy Advance. Cards were scanned on the e-reader to unlock new features on existing games, which in turn allowed users to play miniature games. The Skyridge expansion set included 182 cards; the offered box includes 36 booster packs, each of which contains 11 cards, for a total of 396. Because the box is sealed, the cards inside have never been handled, so we can assume that they are likely all in GEM MINT condition.
Other Pokémon lots in the auction include, but are not limited to:
