NEW YORK, NY.- Christie’s continues to introduce new innovations to the traditional auction calendar this season with a special livestreamed event on December 2: a relay auction of 20th Century Art connecting collectors across time zones, beginning in Hong Kong and continuing on to New York.

Featuring works by Yayoi Kusama, Georges Mathieu, Yoshitomo Nara and Andy Warhol in Hong Kong, and Joan Mitchell, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and Alexander Calder in New York, this new addition to the auction calendar unites the annual Autumn auction series in Hong Kong (Nov 27-Dec 5) with the final 20th Century marquee week of the fall season in New York (Dec 2-4). Further highlights will be announced in the coming weeks.

The relay format reprises the signature pass-the-gavel concept first introduced with Christie’s ONE sale in July, beginning with the auctioneer in Hong Kong who will conduct the first leg of the relay sale from the rostrum at the Hong Kong Convention Centre. They will then pass the gavel on to the New York auctioneer, who will continue live from Christie’s recently-redesigned auction room in Rockefeller Center.

The 20th Century: Hong Kong to New York relay sale will be livestreamed at 9pmHKT / 8amEST via Christie’s LIVE, weChat, and YouTube channels as well as other third-party news and information platforms.

In New York, the December 2 sale will mark the start of Christie’s late fall marquee week of 20th Century Art, which will include Day Sales of Post-War and Contemporary, and Impressionist and Modern Art, as well as La Menagerie, a thematic sale of 20th Century Design. First Open, a companion online-only sale of Post-War and Contemporary Art will be open for bidding from December 1-15.

In Hong Kong, the relay auction will start directly after Christie’s Evening Sale of Modern and Contemporary Art on December 2, featuring exceptional works by Zao Wou-Ki, Sanyu, and Zhang Xiaogang. The sale is a highlight of the Autumn Auction series at Christie’s Hong Kong, which features ten auctions across numerous collecting categories of fine and decorative arts and luxury items, along with special exhibitions and collector experiences.

Christie’s October 20th Century weeks in New York and in London and Paris, have led the market in this unprecedented fall 2020 season, totalling US$387.2 million and US$141.3 million respectively and setting numerous new world auction records for individual artists. In-person exhibitions will be held in both New York and Hong Kong.
