NEW YORK, NY.- ClampArt announced that photographer Michal Chelbin has joined the gallery's roster of artists.
Look out for a new monograph from Damiani in the spring of 2021 to be accompanied by a solo show at ClampArt in New York City. The book and exhibition will feature Chelbin's newest series, "How to Dance the Waltz."
The photographs in this recent body of work were shot at Military Boarding Schools, Prom Ceremonies, and Matador Schools over the course of five years. The photographs explore the connection between youth, uniforms, and dress codes. The series examines the role of a young individual in a group who appears to be just another one of the same; the heightened traditional, sexualized roles of boys and girls that come with wearing a uniform; and the performance uniforms force on young people, in general.
Originally born in Israel, Michal Chelbin lives and works in Israel, France, and the United States. Her work has been widely shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and can be found in many private and public collections such as The Metropolitan Museum, New York City; LACMA, Los Angeles; Getty Center, Los Angeles; Jewish Museum, New York City; Cleveland Museum of Art; Tel Aviv Museum; Sir Elton John Collection, Atlanta, Georgia; SFMOMA, San Francisco; and more.
Her critically acclaimed monograph Strangely Familiar: Acrobats, Athletes, and Other Traveling Troupes was published by Aperture in 2008 and was awarded PDNs Photo Annual Book Award in 2009. Her next monograph entitled The Black Eye was published in 2010 by Twin Palms Publishers. Her third monograph entitled Sailboats and Swans was published in 2012 by Twin Palms Publishers.
