How and what to practice to get better at building
As you play Fortnite, youll be amazed at how fast people can build. Just try shooting at someone, and then bam, a house appears out of nowhere! Sometimes, if that player doesnt feel like it was enough, a tower can start to form from the house. Of course, the best way to counter that tower is to climb up to it, but going the direct route isnt necessarily ideal. So how do you build well and increase your Fortnite stats for the

Be On the Grid
Squares make up the map of Fortnite BR. Besides a large grid dividing the island into easily named sections, theres a smaller one that handles the position of what players build. Youll be able to see the grid when you lay floors on the ground. Theyll all snap to the others edges, right? You cant make them overlap with each other, no matter how hard you try!
Its worth knowing your position relative to the grid as ignorance can make you misplace your builds. For example, if youre too close to one edge of a square, your wall will snap to the further edge instead. Youd be confused about why that happens if you dont know about the grid.
Optimize Your Keybinds
Pro players have their building keybinds somewhere they can reach in a pinch. Going with the default bindings gives you a delayno matter how slightas the function keys are quite far from the WASD keys. In a firefight, that could spell your defeat because you cant build quickly enough to counter!
Adjust your keybinds to something comfortable and easy to reach. Itll go a long way once youve gotten the hang of things through practice.
Practice Makes (Close to) Perfect
You should practice building and editing your builds. While you cant be truly perfect, you can come pretty close. So take the time to practice, and make it a habit to warm up before diving into playing a few rounds. Your actions and movements should be quick and consciously reflexive.
The question is, what should you be practicing?
Basic Fortnite Builds
You can build five things: walls, floors, ramps, pyramids/roofs, and traps. Although the fifth isnt really for building, it follows the same general principles. At any rate, lets focus on the first four.
The Ramp Rush
The first thing you should learn is how to climb to get the high ground. The obvious thing youll build is the ramp. However, only building ramps will get you killed. Without reinforcement, someone can just shoot the bottom-most one and destroy everything youve built.
Thats why you should reinforce your ramps. A single reinforcement entails building a wall below your ramps. The logic is someone on the higher ground cant get at your ramps with the walls in the way. Be careful not to block your way up!
A second reinforcement method gives you defense from below as well. By placing a floor along with your wall, forming a triangle, anyone from below will have to go through the floor to be able to attack your ramp.
Turning While Climbing
The next thing you should learn is how to turn while climbing. A straightforward approach isnt always the best method.
For a 90-degree turn, place a floor, turn toward the direction you want to go, place a wall, jump, then place a ramp. As you practice doing this, you might end up trapping yourself a few times. Thats usually because youre too close to the higher edge of your ramp. Your jump doesnt clear the ramp as it materializes, so you find yourself under it. Be aware of the grid and your position!
You can also do a 180-degree turn. Place walls as you turn back, look down, and then place a floor, jump, then place a ramp. The same principle applies as above, try to keep to the lower end of your ramps to avoid getting trapped.
Falling Safely
So youve climbed high but need to get down. Gliders can take you too far away from the action. When you need to get down but stay in the general area, heres how to fall safely. As you fall, turn to any suitable anchoring point, build two walls (one below the other) then a ramp. Repeat until youre on the ground or at some desired height.
The two walls mark the distance of a fall where you cant get injured. Past that, youll take a hit on your health when landing on the ramp you made. Its okay if you still have enough health, but dangerous when youre limping away from a fight.
The Turtle Box
The last basic build you should learn is the Turtle Box. Its four walls and a pyramid on top. You may also add a floor below the pyramid for more reinforcement. If you need a space to recover, you can put a second pyramid on top of your character. Anyone trying to get in from above will have to go through two pyramids and a floor to get to you. Otherwise, you have a wall and a pyramid, but thats better than having only a wall or nothing at all.
To build a box, build walls as you flick your mouse, creating four walls around you. Then you look up to add the floor and pyramid on top.
Things to Look Forward to
And those are the basics of Fortnite building. Once youre more confident in your skills, you can focus on editing your structures. You can create windows to shoot from or get out of traps. Another use of editing is how to get up or down a tower without having to destroy anything. Editing your builds has its own strategies and tips, so thatll be for next time.
