MINNEAPOLIS, MN.- The American Swedish Institute, the ASI Museum Store and FIKA Café, all closed to visitors because of COVID-19 precautions since March 14, 2020, today announced that they will reopen on Thursday, September 10. The first reopening day will be for ASI Members Day with extended hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Friday, September 11 at 10 a.m., the ASI will reopen to the general public, marking the beginning of new public hours: Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Advanced, timed reservations to visit the museum, which can be made by the public starting August 24, are now required. The Store and FIKA will accept walk-in customers. For more details about visiting and expanded safety guidelines, please refer first to
www.ASImn.org, or call 612-871-4907. ASI is located at 2600 Park Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55407.
ASI has taken many precautions for public health and safety, but will also depend on visitors help and cooperation. We ask, first, that people stay home if they are sick. All visitors will be required to wear masks, are asked to wash their hands frequently, observe social distancing and pay with a credit or debit card. Note, that walk-up museum admissions are temporarily suspended. Please visit ASImn.org for full details regarding safety guidelines and any updates.
The ASI welcomes back visitors with new and continuing art exhibitions, online language classes for all ages, a mix of in-person and virtual Nordic Handcraft workshops, online Nordic Table classes and other talks, plus a combination of outdoor and virtual activities for youth and families. ASI has extended extra/ordinary, its 90th anniversary exhibition that showcases stories behind objects in our collection, through January 2021. We Are the Story, a new quilts installation opening September 8, will be free to view in Osher Gallery. The multi-site exhibition was organized by the Textile Center and the Women of Color Quilters Network and builds upon symbols of liberation, empowerment and the struggles that comprise Black history. The Swedish Dads exhibition highlights photographs by Johan Bävman of fathers who choose to stay at home with their children under Swedens generous parental leave policy. It is now installed not only online, but also outdoors on our perimeter fence for free public viewing with text in four languages!
FIKA and the ASI Museum Store will retain the same new hours as the Museum: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Reservations are not needed to shop at the ASI Museum Store. Drop-in shoppers are welcome! Note that store capacityrestrictions will apply and face masks are required. Please plan to use a credit or debit card. Curbside pick-up is still available.
At FIKA the full lunch menu and table service are available from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. with a limited menu from the counter during non-serving hours. Walk-up reservations are available, but FIKA has limited indoor and outdoor capacity, so is now also accepting advanced reservations which can be made by calling 612-524-5108. There will also be a new menu and takeout/pickup options. Please plan to pay with a credit or debit card.
