NORWALK, CA.- Cerritos College Art Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition: Selections from the Burnett Miller Collection, on view February 28 - March 31, 2005. Burnett Miller’s impact on both the national and international art scene is without a doubt, one of the most significant and influential contributions to art history in the 20th century.
Credited with having brought to prominence a number of different artists whom an international survey of sculpture, painting, installation or performance art would not be without, Burnett Miller had a visionary gift.
Among the artists Burnett Miller included in his exhibitions were: Charles Ray, Chris Burden, Nancy Rubins, Richard Artschwager, Leon Golub, Nancy Spero, Antony Gormley, Roni Horn, Ettore Spalletti, Miroslav Balka, Wolfgang Laib, Fred Sandback, Serge Spitzer, Fred Fehlau, Skip Arnold, Sarah Seager, David Bunn, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Denzil Hurley, Glen Seator, Sigmar Polke, Richard Tuttle and Karen Sander among countless others.
A maverick for exhibiting minimal, installation and concept-based artwork, Burnett Miller often supported work that was not necessarily an easily packaged commodity. His inspirations spoke to a higher purpose of exhibiting provocative and thoughtful work, regardless of its retail performance. Often the challenge in operating a retail gallery space, Burnett Miller emphasized work that excited and inspired him. His gallery, with the crucial support of his wife and business partner Tara Guizot, remained a vital presence in exhibiting vanguard contemporary work, illuminating the path for many of today’s artists.
After receiving his MFA in Art History from USC in the early eighties, Burnett Miller had a brief tenure as Director of Marilyn Pearl Gallery in New York after which he became a Curator at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art. He opened his own gallery in Los Angeles in 1985 and in 1994, relocated to Bergamot Station in Santa Monica where he remained until 1997. He maintained a significant relationship with many European artists and art dealers and was a partner in Miller-Nordenhake gallery in Cologne, Germany. Burnett Miller passed away in 2001. His collection is now overseen by his wife, Tara Guizot who has generously loaned and co-curated the work currently on exhibit at Cerritos College Art Gallery.
