NEW YORK, NY.- Miles McEnery Gallery announced its representation of Rico Gatson.
Rico Gatson is a Brooklyn based mixed media artist working across abstraction and figuration. With a multifaceted practice that spans painting, video, sculpture and installation, Gatson considers himself an object-maker inspired by Conceptualism, Afro-Futurism and spirituality.
For the past twenty years, Gatsons body of work has been recognized for its powerful political discourse often rooted in significant moments in Black history. He presents the viewer with a myriad of images related to pivotal moments that include the Watts Riots, the presidential election of Barack Obama and the formation of the Black Panthers.
Gatsons striking, graphic visual language combines African textile-inspired colors and bold patterns with stark black and white line work. These vibrational elements take shape both on canvas and paper, as well as on towering totems, three dimensional sculptures, video, and mural mosaics. His recent series Beacons comprises permanent, large-scale tile murals that are on view at the 167th Street Subway in the Bronx.
The artists compositions also recall the geometric layouts of Constructivist propaganda posters and reference religious icon painting, jazz rhythms, and the kineticism of Piet Mondrians proto-Op art of the 1940s. The experience of Gatsons work is a combination of dynamic movement embedded with layers of social commentary that is often conveyed emotionally and physiologically rather than explicitly defined. He often combines thoughtfully placed images of significant cultural figures from the twentieth century to present day.
An upcoming solo exhibition of Gatsons paintings and drawings will open on 19 November at Miles McEnery Gallery, New York.
