LOS ANGELES, CA.- Kayne Griffin Corcoran announced representation of artist Sarah Crowner. The artists first solo exhibition with the gallery is planned for April 2021, preceded by a group exhibition that will include new work by the artist opening July 11, 2020.
Sarah Crowners varied practice consists of paintings, sculptures, and installations inviting the viewer to engage with the work and the environment that surrounds it. In addition to the natural world, Crowners visual language often references mid-century abstraction, architecture, and modern design, re-contextualizing those visual cues and found forms into cut and sewn paintings, stage design, and costumes. For Crowner, shifts in scale and materials amplify simple forms and their relation to the human body.
For her project in 2019 with Kayne Griffin Corcoran, Crowner created three individually tinted concrete sculptures in the gallerys courtyard. Pulling references from Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha and Henri Matisse, Crowners sculptures created an environment that both referenced landscape and simultaneously created a new one. Visitors were invited to touch and interact with the sculptures, emphasizing a tactile and bodily experience characteristic of Crowners work.
Crowner's practice is informed by the history and technique of both art and design. Although her work presents as being abstract, she utilizes techniques within her paintings and tile works that are traditionally employed by tailors, architects, and other builders. Through this, she places importance on the act and style of making. Whether working with canvas, tiles, concrete, or the stage, Crowner connects the viewer to the work immediately and unambiguously.
Sarah Crowner (b. 1974, Philadelphia, PA) lives and works in New York. Forthcoming exhibitions and projects include: Museo Amparo, Puebla, Mexico, Fall 2021, and a large-scale commission for the US Embassy of Honduras in 2022.
