SYDNEY.- Sydney Contemporary, Australasias premier international contemporary art fair, today announced it will return in September 2021.
First presented in 2013 and presented annually since 2017, Sydney Contemporary will not present an edition in 2020 due to uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tim Etchells, Founder and co-owner of Sydney Contemporary, said: In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, given the uncertainty surrounding public gatherings and restrictions on travel, we have made the decision that Sydney Contemporary will return in 2021.
Sydney Contemporary is the largest and most diverse gathering of local and international galleries in Australia and represents the highest short-term concentration of art sales in Australia annually. Each iteration of Sydney Contemporary attracts more than 25,000 visitors, and the last four editions have generated $80 million in art sales for participating galleries and their artists.
Sydney Contemporary is a truly unique fair amongst the busy program of International and regional art fairs. I am confident it will return strongly in 2021 to showcase the work of local and international artists and to support the vibrant and resilient Australian arts sector, added Mr Etchells.
Staged at Carriageworks in Sydneys Redfern since its inception, Sydney Contemporarys fifth edition in September 2019 featured 95 galleries from 34 countries around the world exhibiting the work of more than 450 artists.
Sydney Contemporary has proudly called Carriageworks home since our first fair in 2013, which I believe to be one of the best venues in the world for an art fair. Carriageworks remains our primary choice and we very much hope to return in 2021. We wish Carriageworks every success as they see themselves through the upcoming period, said Mr Etchells.
