NEW YORK, NY.- The Garment District Alliance announced the latest in its ongoing series of public art exhibits, showcasing 26 pieces of drawn and painted works titled And, created by artist Tom Koken.
Located inside the Kaufman Arcade building on 139 W 35th Street, the free exhibit is accessible to the public through March 27. And is part of the Garment District Space for Public Art program, which showcases artists in unusual locations throughout the year and over 15 years has produced more than 200 installations, exhibits and performances.
We are committed to bringing thought-provoking works of art to feature through our Space for Public Art program and to draw more visitors to the Garment District, said Barbara A. Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance. Kokens incredibly detailed pieces truly brighten the space and are a must-see for all.
Koken creates his works through mimicking a traditional printing process by hand and incorporating different parts of floral patterns. Through each piece, he strives to create compositions where chaos confronts beauty and opposites simultaneously exist, while also delving into symbols and metaphors that are both personal and universal.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Koken studied at Kansas City Art Institute and received a BFA with honors from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He has showcased his work in solo and group exhibitions in venues across the world, including New York City, Toronto and Milan. Kokens work is in the collection of Bank of Montreal and Prudential Life Insurance, as well as several private collections. He currently lives and works in New York City.
