What your taste in music says about you

Over the years there has been a lot of research about the connection between an individuals personality and their taste in music. One recent major study of almost 40,000 people from around the world revealed all the common traits of your personality based on music.

Some of the characteristics that researchers established they could more accurately predict in an individual due to their music taste included the levels of open mindedness, creativity and self esteem. By listening to an individuals favourite few songs it becomes a lot easier for researchers to make an educated opinion on that individuals personality.

For example, extroverts usually like songs with solid based lines. Those who enjoy more complex music (like classical or blues) usually have a higher IQ and are more creative.

Different genres of music also tend to get played in different situations. For example, you are less likely to hear jazz or classical music in a nightclub! One place where you can find all the different genres of music is the radio. There are so many different stations, covering all the varying categories.

Have a look at what your taste in music says about you below:

Hip Hop Music
When it comes to hip hop music society tends to have a stereotype of aggression or violence, usually based off the lyrics and overall beat and rhythm of the songs. However, this research suggests that those who enjoy hip hop music aren’t aggressive or violent, they actually tend to be outgoing and have high self esteem.

Dance/ Electronic Music
Those who love a good dance tune tend to be assertive and outgoing. The research also suggests that these individuals also love to go out and experience new things, and go on adventures, etc. Dance lovers enjoy going out with others and like to make an event out of it.

Heavy Metal Music
Like with hop hip music, heavy metal or rock music lovers, there is a stereotype that they can be occasionally aggressive. However, the research actually suggests the opposite, with heavy metal music lovers tending to be more introverted.

Pop Music
As the name suggests, many people tend to fall into this popular category of music. Those who love pop music are usually predictable, honest and are extroverted. The research also suggested they are typically less creative then music lovers from other categories.

Classical Music
Those who fall into this category seems to be introverted yet have good confidence about themselves. Unlike pop music lovers, those who enjoy classical music tend to be creative. Classical music tends to be a little bit more complex then other categories which is one of the reasons why there is the intelligence trait of these personalities.

Indie Music
Indie music lovers are also usually more creative and rational. Other major personality traits that are also common in this music genre include low self esteem and uneasiness, while they also tend to be less hardworking.

Soul/ Jazz Music
Those who love a little bit of the blues were suggested to have higher self esteem and more extroverted with higher levels of creativeness and intelligence. Like classical music, jazz or soul music tends to be a little bit more complex which feeds into the intelligence trait of these personalities.

Country Music
Country music lovers have been found to be conventional and hardworking. This type of music usually covers songs of heartbreak and relationship breakdowns, however music lovers of this genre are actually emotionally secure. On top of this, in this music category individuals are also conservative and not as open to new experiences as other categories.
