MINNEAPOLIS, MN.- The Minneapolis Institute of Art today announced that Patrick Noon, senior curator of paintings and Elizabeth MacMillan Chair of the Department of Paintings, has announced his retirement, effective January 31.
During his 22-year tenure at Mia, he played a pivotal role in the reinstallations of collections during both the 1998 and 2006 museum expansions. His acquisitions brought considerable depth to the museums holdings, with the addition of some 200 paintings, including such spectacular works as Claude Lorrains Pastoral Landscape, Alexander Roslins Comtesse dEgmont Pignatelli, Wilhelm Lists Young Woman in Undergarments, Nicolas de Largillieres Portrait of Charles-Leonor Aubry, Marquis de Castelnau, Albert Joseph Moores Battledore, Théodore Rousseaus View of Mont Blanc from La Faucille, Sir Nathaniel Dance-Hollands Portrait of Olive Craster, and Eugène Delacroixs Still Life with Dahlias, Zinnias, Hollyhocks and Plums. In addition to fostering many partnerships that resulted in excellent visiting exhibitions to Mia, Noons own research resulted in shows renowned in the field, including Crossing the Channel: British and French Painting in the Age of Romanticism (2003) and Delacroix and the Rise of Modern Art (2015).
Patrick Noon has contributed 22 years to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and his achievements will long be remembered, said Katherine Crawford Luber, PhD, Nivin and Duncan MacMillan Director & President at Mia. We are grateful to Patrick for the work he has done to shape Mia into the institution it is today.
Noon joined Mia in 1997. Prior to Mia, Noon was a founding curator of prints, drawings, and rare books at the Yale Center for British Art. He has also authored numerous books and catalogues, including Richard Parkes Bonington, the Complete Paintings (London: Yale University Press, 2008), Richard Parkes Bonington, the Complete Drawings (London: Yale University Press, 2011), Delacroix and the Rise of Modern Art (London: National Gallery Company and Yale University Press, 2015), and Crossing the Channel: British and French Painting in the Age of Romanticism (London: Tate Publications, 2003).
