NEW YORK, NY.- It is with the heaviest of hearts that we shared the news of the passing of beloved artist Jacqueline Hassink.
Jacqueline lived her life with the greatest integrity, honesty of heart and depth of curiosity. She was an inspiration to us and will be sorely missed. She met life head on, at its best and worst, even when facing down her illness -her strength and fortitude matched only by her humor and grace.
Jacqueline was born in 1966 in Enschede (Netherlands). She attended the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague and the Academy of Fine Art in Trondheim (Norwary) where she graduated in sculpture in 1992. She then found her way to photography which became her primary medium. From 1996 she lived and worked in Brooklyn, New York. She taught conceptual photography at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, and the International Center of Photography in New York.
Jacquelines work focused on the structures of economic power and how, as a result of globalization, they now extend worldwide. She was particularly interested in examining the venues where that power was manifested. Seen in her series of boardrooms of multinationals on the Fortune Global 500 List: The Table of Power (1993-1995), then later in Female Power Stations: Queen Bees (1996-2000). Its a great testament to her perseverance, and spirit that she was able to gain access to these inner sanctums. Jacqueline believed in extensive research of her subjects and in the gaining of that knowledge she built trust. She later extended this to the Monks of Kyoto with whom she created the incredible body of work View, Kyoto. She was also a gifted book maker and her publications are unique expressions of not just her pictures but documents of her picture making.
In 2002 Jacqueline won the Rencontres dArles Unlimited Award and in 2013 the Dutch Doc Award, in 2012 she was shortlisted for the prestigious Prix Pictet.
Last spring, her project Unwired was exhibited both here at the gallery and the Nederlands Fotomuseum, and her series iPortrait will be exhibited in China as part of the international Lianzhou Foto Festival.
We remember Jacqueline as ever, riding through Brooklyn on her bicycle.
