SAN DIEGO, CA.- Portland, ME artist
Aaron T Stephan has installed a 70-foot long monumental sculpture in the newly opened International Arrivals facility at San Diego International Airport titled Paths Woven. The suspended artwork is composed of over 25 gracefully curved ladders elegantly soaring throughout the lobby atrium.
Paths Woven begins in the west end of the lobby with a single ladder made from Claro Walnut; a regional hardwood representing the local community. Over the span of the atrium space, the simple path of one ladder is joined by additional maple ladders that appear and weave together to culminate in a dynamic cloud of line and form. As a whole, the work embraces a sense of wonder and welcome in a beautiful natural material. It identifies San Diego as a place of strong community and personal identity - in a synergistic relationship, and on equal footing.
Artist Aaron T Stephan lives and works in Portland, Maine. His work presents a wry look at the world around him focusing on the complex web of information carried by everyday materials and objects. His work has taken diverse forms including a twenty-foot high table and chairs, a shelter made entirely of books, and a series of drawings reproducing iconic artworks ad infinitum. His public works can be found in the collections of cities across the nation including Salt Lake City, UT; Clearwater, FL; Arvada, CO; Nashville, TN; and Lubbock, TX; among many others
The ladder is an evocative cultural symbol of an individuals path in the world commented the artist For San Diego International Airport, I used the ladder as a metaphor for the transformation that occurs as families, friends and colleagues find their acquaintances in the Arrivals Facility. This is where the individual traveler becomes a community member
The new 130,000-square-foot International Arrivals facility at San Diego International Airports Terminal 2, which opened on June 30, allows the airport to accommodate the increase in international passengers resulting from recently added overseas flights.
Paths Woven is a permanent installation commissioned by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority for the newly expanded facility in Terminal 2. Further details can be found on the airports official website: www.san.org
