Mateo Blanco's Golden Flag glows at Rosenbaum Contemporary - Art that redefines American identity

Working across a wide range of materials—from textiles to silver to gold—Blanco continues to challenge tradition and engage viewers in cultural dialogue.

BOCA RATON, FLA.- Internationally acclaimed artist Mateo Blanco, known for reimagining the American flag through innovative and deeply symbolic artworks, unveils his latest creation: “Golden Flag”—now on view at Rosenbaum Contemporary in Boca Raton, Florida. Made entirely with 24-karat gold leaf, Golden Flag presents the U.S. flag as more than a national symbol—it is portrayed as a precious treasure, embodying ideals of strength, unity, and legacy. The luminous surface represents both the richness of American identity and the artist’s personal journey as a Colombian-American. Golden Flag is more than a patriotic gesture—it serves as a bridge between ancestral and contemporary native cultures, from Colombia to the United States. Through this work, Blanco draws connections between his Colombian roots and the evolving landscape of contempor ... More

Most were seriously degraded from the ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Almine Rech New York, Tribeca is presenting 'Skin of a Storm', Inès Longevial's third solo exhibition with the gallery, on view from June 26 to August 1, 2025. Inès Longevial's oil paintings draw attention to the skin, layered in seemingly smooth swatches of ultramarine, crimson, slate, chantilly, and mauve. These self-portraits—composed mostly from memory, informed by a repository of textures and forms consulted prior to their emergence—are a method of situating the artist in herself and the world. They are painted with urgency and oftentimes completed in one sitting. In this flow-state, the female form becomes a surface littered with subtle footnotes, like an odd wrinkle in a pleated skirt or the deep crease of a dog-earred page. A cropped face with down-turned eyes, a punctuated nipple, and a scapula blooming like an iris are, at a distance, totemic. The stoic sitters are disassociated, fermented. Upon ... More

The Museo del Prado presents a show dedicated to Antonio Muñoz Degrain in the nineteenth- century gallery   National Portrait Gallery unveils grand-scale portraits from photography's dawn   Joe Bradley unleashes "Animal Family": New figurative paintings debut at David Zwirner London

Antonio Muñoz Degrain, Before the Wedding, 1882. Oil on canvas, 120 x 95 cm. Madrid, Museo Nacional del Prado. Acquired in 1884.

MADRID.- The Museo Nacional del Prado continues its efforts to revitalise and highlight the merits of its extensive nineteenth-century painting collections with a new exhibition devoted solely to the painter Antonio Muñoz Degrain (1840–1924). An artist who often operated outside the prevailing trends of his time, Muñoz Degrain is now the protagonist of Room 60 at the museum, where ten works spanning his entire artistic career are on display. The selection includes iconic pieces like Landscape at El Pardo, Mist Rising (1866), recently restored for this occasion and considered the artist’s finest landscape. The painting’s loose brushwork, slightly reminiscent of Velázquez in certain aspects, and astonishing conveyance of atmosphere earned Muñoz Degrain a medal at the 1866 National Exhibition. Works like Memories of Granada (1881) in Room 63 A and View of Granada and Sierra Nevada (c.1915) illustrate ... More

John C. Calhoun. Artist: Francis D'Avignon. Copy after: Mathew B. Brady. Lithograph on paper, 1850. National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution.

WASHINGTON, DC.- The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is presenting “From Shadow to Substance: Grand-Scale Portraits During Photography’s Formative Years” June 20 through June 7, 2026. Drawing from the museum’s extensive early photography collection, this exhibition traces the evolution of the grand- scale, whole-plate portrait format from the high-end daguerreotype and mid-range ambrotype to the more affordable tintype. The exhibition is curated by Senior Curator of Photographs Ann Shumard. Photographers seeking customers during the medium’s early years, from 1840 to 1860, often urged the public to “Secure the shadow ere the substance fade.” Hinting at life’s fragility, this tagline underscored photography’s ability to capture a fleeting likeness and preserve it for posterity. Portraits in the impressive whole-plate format measuring 8 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches—were among the premier offerings of the nation’s leading ... More

Joe Bradley in his studio, New York, 2025. Photo by Weston Wells.

LONDON.- David Zwirner is presenting Animal Family, an exhibition of new paintings by American artist Joe Bradley at the gallery’s London location. This is Bradley’s second exhibition with David Zwirner since the announcement of his representation in May 2023. His celebrated debut at David Zwirner New York, Vom Abend, was presented in spring 2024. In November 2025, a major survey of Bradley’s works from the past ten years will open at Kunsthalle Krems, Austria. In these new paintings, figurative elements—which Bradley had begun to develop in previous works—emerge as central compositional structures. ‘I have never really felt comfortable calling myself an abstract painter,’ says Bradley. ‘There have always been flashes of figuration in my work. For whatever reason, at this moment, I feel ready to let it all come to the surface.’ 1A group of horizontal paintings feature black contour lines that serve as scaffoldings for swaths of colour, floral blots o ... Shannon Finley unveils a mesmerizing journey through layered geometries at Miles McEnery Gallery   Frank Frazetta's 'Famous Funnies' Buck Rogers cover art soars above $1 million   Christina Kimeze explores "In-Between Spaces" in solo Hauser & Wirth debut

Shannon Finley, Mondrian’s Garden, 2024, Acrylic on linen, 78 3/4 x 63 inches, 200 x 160 cm.

NEW YORK, NY.- Miles McEnery Gallery is presenting Mutations, an exhibition of new paintings by Shannon Finley, on view 26 June - 15 August. Accompanying the exhibition is a fully illustrated digital publication featuring a text by Sebastian Preuss. Over several decades, Shannon Finley has perfected a unique visual language of layered luminous fields and cascading geometries. At first glance, they suggest polygonal blueprints, or nets of three dimensional objects rendered in mid-collapse. Though, there is a glossy, dew-like quality to these works, a roughness around the edges that makes their mechanistic perfection feel strangely naturalistic. Each composition does not feel constructed but cultivated; a self-propagating organism rather than a finalized object. However, Finley’s paintings are anything but spontaneous; they emerge from a highly controlled, months-long iterative process. He begins by building geometric shapes on the canvas, then transfers an image ... More

LOS ANGELES, CA.- For her first solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth, British artist Christina Kimeze presents new paintings that explore what she calls ‘the in-between spaces’ where boundaries between interior life and shared experience blur and evolve. Kimeze’s canvases depict ethereal landscapes and enigmatic figures, some solitary and others intimately connected. Tactility is an essential element of these works; made on a foundation of suede matboard, they combine dry chalk, oil pastel and wet paints which Kimeze crushes into the fabric. This technique endows her paintings with an aura of indeterminacy that underscores the mutable nature of her subject matter. The exhibition title is taken from the Thom Gunn poem, ‘The Life of the Otter, Tucson Desert Museum’ (1992), in which the late poet imagines the swift, circular movement of an otter underwater and likens ... Marc Straus opens Renée Stout's second solo exhibition with the gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- The gallery is presenting Truth-telling, Renée Stout’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Stout journals constantly. Pages fill with informal doodles, notes, passing thoughts, small, intuitive marks, that serve as points of departure as she experiments with how a simple drawing might shift when translated into the language of painting and sculpture. Rather than hiding this process, she invites the viewer to witness it, to trace the progression from private sketch to public object, and to consider the evolving relationship between the two. While not intended solely as political commentary, many of these works inevitably respond to the climate in which they are made. Especially as she resides in Washington D.C. In a cultural moment where some voices are denied or subsumed, where discourse often resembles shouting, Stout’s practice affirms the necessity of thoughtful ... More

1860 Mormon Gold Half Eagle heads to Heritage's Summer FUN US Coins Auction
DALLAS, TX.- For many, any discussion about privately issued U.S. gold coins conjures images of the California gold rush, and with good reason. But the Golden State was not alone as a source of the needed gold. Among the other states that contributed to the growing domestic gold production was Colorado. Discovery of gold in the Centennial State prompted the coinage of a rare gold piece by the Mormon community in Salt Lake City, an example of which will be among the treasures grabbing a share of the spotlight in Heritage’s Summer FUN US Coins Signature® Auction July 17-20. Once believed to have been first coined in May 1859, the 1860 Mormon Five Dollar, AU53 PCGS. CAC. K-6, R.5 offered in this auction is a beautiful example of the rare lion and beehive issue struck between January and March 1860, with a likely total mintage of only 587 pieces. “The desire for financial ... Daniel Manrique from the Perspective of Carlos Plascencia. The 'Ñeros' in Culture"), the exhibition, which opened yesterday, invites visitors to form their own judgments on the artist's broader creative output. The exhibition moves beyond Manrique's celebrated murals to showcase his diverse artistic contributions, largely through the lens of cultural promoter Carlos Plascencia Fabila (1956-2015). Plascencia, also a key figure in the Tepito Arte Acá collective, provides an intimate perspective on Manrique's work. This significant show is a ... More

London Williams debuts "Poetics" at Yossi Milo Gallery, crafting a Black queer utopia
NEW YORK, NY.- Yossi Milo announced London Williams’ first solo exhibition with the gallery, Poetics, which opened to the public on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The exhibition is on view in the West Gallery through Friday, July 25, concurrent with solo exhibitions by J. Carino in the East Gallery and Beck Lowry in the Qube. London Williams (b. 1998; Milwaukee, WI) immerses his audience in a constructed world, where he posits a sartorial vision of a Black, queer utopia. Williams’ multi media act of fantasy is speculative, patchworked from domestic interiors that build a new space for him and his subjects to call home. The artist’s realm unfolds room by room, inviting viewers to enter an elliptical world of parlors, dance halls, and dreams. Poetics presents several monumental paintings by Williams that are stretched onto the walls by crystal- tipped upholstery pins. Depicted at near-life size, the ... More

"Symbiotic Wood" exhibition challenges perceptions of nature and materials
BERLIN.- The Kunstgewerbemuseum – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin has opened "Symbiotic Wood," a new special exhibition that invites visitors to rethink their understanding of wood, particularly timber affected by beetle infestations and climate change. Inaugurated on Friday, June 27, the exhibition runs until September 21, 2025. "Symbiotic Wood" positions wood as a "more-than-human" material, emphasizing its role in intricate ecosystems beyond solely human utility. The exhibition explores how environmental shifts and monoculture forestry have heightened forests' vulnerability to insects and fungi. Conventionally, beetle-infested wood is considered low-value, but this presentation aims to demonstrate how such "damaged" material can inspire novel design solutions. The interdisciplinary exhibition begins by delving into the scientific aspects of beetle and fungal infestations in spruce forests, examining both local and global impacts. It highlights how these phenomena are intensified by climate ... More
