November 11, 1824. May 11, 2018. Jean-Léon Gérôme (May 11, 1824 - January 10, 1904) was a French artist born in Vesoul, France. The leading Orientalist painter of his time, he was also highly regarded for his polychromed sculptures, evocations of life in ancient Rome, and depictions of events from French history.
