Sotheby's New York to offer $9 million single-owner Patek Philippe collection
Thirty watches, led by more than two Patek Philippe auction debuts and an exceptional group of fresh-tomarket Tiffany & Co.-retailed timepieces.

NEW YORK, NY.- For many collectors, the story behind a watch is as compelling as the craftsmanship within it. Beyond mechanical ingenuity, rarity or aesthetic distinction, a timepiece carries the history of its ownership – a connection to the person who first acquired it, the life it accompanied, and the story it carries into the future. Provenance lends a watch an additional dimension of meaning, enriching its appeal with a human narrative that transcends its material value. In this respect, original ownership represents something particularly rare in the world of collecting – a direct, unbroken link to a timepiece’s beginnings. One purchase, one owner, one story.

This December, Sotheby’s will present The Original Owner Collection, an exceptional group of thirty watches, nearly all of which were retained by its original owner since purchase. Headlined by two extraordinary Patek Philippe timepieces making their auction debuts, the Reference 5374/300P Grand Complication Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar and the Reference 5260/355R Aquanaut Luce Rainbow Minute Repeater, the collection unites exceptional rarity with impeccable provenance. The remaining watches are drawn predominantly from a distinguished group of Tiffany & Co.-retailed Patek Philippe references, including examples that are either making their first appearance on the public market or, in the case of Tiffany-signed pieces, appearing at auction for the first time. Together, these fresh-to-market timepieces represent a remarkable collecting opportunity and will form a centerpiece of Sotheby’s Important Watches auction in New York on 7 December, where the collection is expected to achieve in excess of $9 million.

"At its heart, collecting is about preserving stories as much as it is preserving objects. What makes The Original Owner Collection so remarkable is the direct connection each watch retains to the individual who first acquired it. Built over many years with extraordinary focus and discernment, the collection brings together some of the most sought-after modern Patek Philippe references, each accompanied by an unbroken chain of ownership from the moment it left the retailer. That continuity is exceptionally rare, lending the collection a level of provenance and authenticity that cannot be replicated. More than a showcase of remarkable timepieces, it is a testament to the deeply personal relationship between collector and watch, and to the stories that accompany these objects through time." — Leigh Safar, Sotheby’s Global Head of Important Watch Collections

A Selection of Highlights

Patek Philippe Reference 5374/300P-001 Grand Complication Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar. An exceptional platinum and diamond-set automatic minute repeating perpetual calendar wristwatch with moon phases, leap year, and 24-hour indication, Circa 2026. Estimate $2.5–5 million

Unveiled at Watches and Wonders in 2022, Patek Philippe’s Reference 5374/300P-001 represents an extraordinary Haute Joaillerie interpretation of one of the manufacture’s most celebrated grand complications. Preserving the distinguished combination of a minute repeater and perpetual calendar, complete with moon phases, leap year, and 24-hour indication, this exceptional creation elevates the reference through an elaborate arrangement of baguette-cut diamonds and sapphires.

Offered at auction for the first time, the present example stands out as a rare expression of Patek Philippe’s ability to unite the technical sophistication of its grand complications with the artistry of high jewelry.

Patek Philippe Reference 5260/355R Aquanaut Luce Rainbow Minute Repeater. A pink gold, diamond and multi-colored sapphire-set automatic minute repeating wristwatch, Circa 2024. Estimate $1.4–2.8 million

In 2023, Patek Philippe introduced the first minute repeater in the Aquanaut collection with the launch of References 5260/1455R and 5260/355R. These exceptional timepieces unite the sporty, contemporary character of the Aquanaut with the refined traditions of Haute Horlogerie and Haute Joaillerie.

Appearing at auction for the first time, the Reference 5260/355R-001 is an especially striking interpretation, adorned with 52 multi-colored baguette-cut sapphires, 112 baguette-cut diamonds, and 160 brilliant-cut diamonds. Its distinctive bezel is enhanced by a double row of diamonds and multi-colored sapphires, meticulously applied using the demanding invisible-setting technique.

At its heart beats the self-winding Caliber R 27 minute repeater. Equipped with two traditional gongs, the movement chimes the hours, quarter-hours, and minutes elapsed since the last quarter-hour on demand, bringing together the technical sophistication of a grand complication with the exuberant artistry of high jewelry.

Patek Philippe Reference 5208R-001 Grand Complications Minute Repeater Instantaneous Perpetual Calendar. An exceptional pink gold automatic minute repeating perpetual calendar mono-pusher chronograph wristwatch with moon phases, leap year, and day/night indication, Circa 2023Estimate $900,000–1.8 million

The Reference 5208R-001 represents an exceptional expression of Patek Philippe’s celebrated Triple Complication, uniting three of the manufacture’s most sophisticated horological mechanisms within a single timepiece. First introduced in 2011 in platinum, the Reference 5208 was distinguished by its sophisticated sunburst gray dial and conceived as a further evolution of the Reference 5207. Following the discontinuation of the platinum version, Patek Philippe unveiled the Reference 5208R-001 in pink gold at Baselworld in 2018.

At the heart of the Reference 5208R-001 lies the self-winding Caliber R CH 27 PS QI, an exceptionally complex movement combining a minute repeater with a column-wheel-controlled mono-pusher chronograph featuring a horizontal clutch, alongside an instantaneous perpetual calendar displayed through apertures. Complemented by moon phases, leap year, and day/night indications, this remarkable concentration of complications exemplifies Patek Philippe’s enduring mastery of high watchmaking.

"The Original Owner Collection embodies many of the qualities collectors value most today – rarity, exceptional condition, and, above all, provenance. To encounter even a single important watch that has remained with its original owner since purchase is uncommon, so to present an entire collection united by that distinction is truly remarkable. Combined with the strength of the references represented, including several making their first appearance at auction, this collection offers a compelling snapshot of modern watch collecting at its very best." — Richard Lopez, Sotheby’s Senior Watch Specialist, North and Latin America

The Enduring Legacy of Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co.

The relationship between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. dates to 1851, when the celebrated American jeweler became the manufacturer's first official retail partner in the United States. Over more than 170 years, this enduring alliance has produced a distinctive collecting category, encompassing important Patek Philippe timepieces retailed by Tiffany & Co. as well as rare examples bearing the signatures of both houses on the dial. Within The Original Owner Collection, this historic partnership is particularly well represented, with a selection of modern Patek Philippe watches acquired through Tiffany & Co., including double-signed examples that have never before appeared at auction. Together, these timepieces underscore the enduring significance of one of luxury watchmaking’s most historic partnerships and offer collectors a rare opportunity to acquire exceptional modern references distinguished by their Tiffany & Co. provenance.

Patek Philippe Reference 5164G-001 Aquanaut Travel Time. Retailed by Tiffany & Co.: A white gold automatic dual time zone wristwatch with date and day/night indication, Circa 2024. Estimate $150,000–300,000

Combining the sporty character of the Aquanaut with one of Patek Philippe’s most practical complications, the Reference 5164G-001 offers a versatile expression of the manufacture’s contemporary watchmaking. Introduced in 2024, the model is crafted in white gold and features an opaline blue-grey dial complemented by a matching blue-grey composite rubber strap, creating a refined monochromatic aesthetic.

The Reference 5164 marked an important evolution within the Aquanaut family as its first iteration to incorporate Patek Philippe’s Travel Time dual-time-zone complication. The system allows local and home time to be read simultaneously through two central hour hands, while apertures on the dial provide day/night indications for each time zone. Local time is adjusted using two pushers on the left side of the case, allowing the local-time hand to advance or retreat independently while preserving the home-time indication.

The present example possesses an additional distinction of considerable interest to collectors, bearing the signature of Tiffany & Co. on its embossed dial. It represents the first Tiffany & Co.-signed Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Reference 5164G-001 to be offered at auction.

Patek Philippe Reference 7118/1451G-001 Nautilus. Retailed by Tiffany & Co.: A white gold, diamond and sapphire-set automatic wristwatch with bracelet, Circa 2026. Estimate $400,000–800,000

Introduced in 2023, the Patek Philippe Nautilus Reference 7118/1451G-001 represents a spectacular union of fine watchmaking and Haute Joaillerie. Crafted in white gold, this extraordinary creation is adorned with an impressive 1,500 diamonds and 876 sapphires, transforming the iconic Nautilus design into an exceptional display of gem-setting artistry.

With the exception of the sapphire hour markers, the gemstones adorning the dial, case, and bracelet are meticulously applied using the snow setting technique, creating a dazzling, continuous surface of closely set stones with minimal metal visible. The result is a remarkable interplay of brilliance, color, and texture that elevates the familiar silhouette of the Nautilus into a striking high-jewelry statement.

Further enhancing its desirability, the present example was retailed by Tiffany & Co. and is offered at auction for the first time, combining the appeal of an exceptional gem-set Nautilus with the distinction of the celebrated Tiffany & Co. retailing relationship.

Patek Philippe Reference 5711/1A-018 Nautilus. Retailed by Tiffany & Co.: A limited edition stainless steel automatic wristwatch with date and bracelet, made to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the partnership between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co., Circa 2022. Estimate $1–1.6 million

In 2022 to commemorate the historic partnership between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co., the two houses unveiled the Nautilus Reference 5711/1A-018, an exceptionally limited edition of just 170 examples. Its dial is distinguished by the unmistakable robin’s-egg blue hue synonymous with Tiffany Blue®, creating a striking contrast with the nautical character of the stainless-steel case and bracelet.

The announcement came as a remarkable surprise to collectors, who had widely anticipated that the olive-green Reference 5711/1A-014 would mark the final chapter of the legendary reference following its discontinuation. Instead, Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. delivered one last, exceptionally rare iteration, uniting the enduring appeal of the Nautilus with the distinctive identity of the celebrated American jeweler.

Representing one of the most coveted and consequential limited editions of the past decade, the Reference 5711/1A-018 occupies a singular place in the history of modern Patek Philippe collecting.

Patek Philippe Reference 5821/1AR-001 Cubitus. Retailed by Tiffany & Co.: A pink gold and stainless steel automatic wristwatch with date and bracelet, Circa 2025. Estimate $150,000–300,000

Following the discontinuation of the Nautilus, Patek Philippe faced the considerable challenge of introducing a new design to its catalogue while building upon the enduring success of one of modern watchmaking’s most iconic creations. The answer arrived with the Cubitus, the manufacturer's first entirely new collection since the launch of the Twenty~4 in 1999.

While establishing its own distinctive identity, the Cubitus continues the design lineage of its predecessors through a distinctly architectural character. Its boldly defined square case introduces a fresh geometric expression, while the integrated bracelet retains unmistakable aesthetic echoes of the Nautilus.

The present Reference 5821/1AR-001 is distinguished by its two-tone construction in pink gold and stainless steel, with polished and vertically satin-brushed surfaces complemented by an elegant sunburst blue dial. Further enhancing its appeal to collectors, this example bears the signature of Tiffany & Co. and represents the first Tiffany & Co.-signed Cubitus to appear at auction.

Patek Philippe Reference 5261R-001 Aquanaut Luce/ Retailed by Tiffany & Co.: A pink gold automatic annual calendar wristwatch with moon phases, Circa 2025. Estimate $200,000–400,000

At Watches and Wonders Geneva in 2023, Patek Philippe introduced the first Annual Calendar to the Aquanaut collection. Remaining faithful to the model’s sporty character, the Reference 5261R-001 pairs a 39.9 mm rose gold case with the collection’s signature composite strap, rendered in a sophisticated blue-grey tone that complements the embossed dial. Powering the watch is Caliber 26-330 S QA LU, introduced with this model as a new addition to Patek Philippe’s family of Annual Calendar movements.

As Patek Philippe continues to expand the Aquanaut Luce collection with increasingly sophisticated complications, the present reference is particularly notable as the first complicated Aquanaut to eschew a gem-set bezel, allowing its distinctive architecture and calendar indications to take center stage.

Further enhancing its appeal to collectors, the present example bears the signature of Tiffany & Co. on its dial and represents the first example of the Reference 5261R-001 retailed by Tiffany & Co. to appear at auction.

Patek Philippe: Reference 5980/1R-001 Nautilus. Retailed by Tiffany & Co.: A pink gold automatic flyback chronograph wristwatch with date and bracelet, Circa 2024 Estimate $250,000–500,000

Unveiled at Baselworld in 2013, the Nautilus 5980/1R-001 brought the collection’s celebrated chronograph to its fullest expression in solid pink gold, with an integrated matching bracelet, making it one of the most striking versions of the model. Scholarship suggests that the present example belongs to the final generation of production prior to the reference’s discontinuation in 2024, and benefits from the updated bracelet featuring micro-adjustment capability.

Distinguished further by the highly coveted Tiffany & Co. signature on the dial, the present watch is preserved in overall excellent condition, and accompanied by its suite of accessories.
