NEW YORK, NY.- Kristen Lorello is presenting Bayne Peterson's second solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition is on view Wednesday, September 6th to Saturday, October 14th.

Bayne Peterson: Still Life includes four new dyedplywood sculptures by the Providence, RI based artist. These hand-carved works intensify the artist's approach to color, form, and material, towards an increasing visual complexity. Multicolored sections of repeated lines generate a skewed pattern that at times appears to slip away from an orthogonal grid. In previous sculptures, patterns registered clear horizontal and vertical directions. In contrast, in these new works, the artist has deliberately tilted the angles at which separate sections of pattern meet, conveying the sense of a misleading topography. Planes of color appear to shuffle forward and backward and confound the eye's perception of roundness and flatness.

Each sculpture includes an overall form of biomorphic and symmetrical components, and multiple separate smaller pieces, sometimes piled together into random arrangements. Peterson looked to paintings, architecture, and small-scale vessels (salt cellars and goblets) from a number of historical periods. Ancient architecture from various traditions, as well as Renaissance and 17th-Century Dutch still life paintings, and their depictions of table arrangements overflowing with food, conveyed contrasting notions of order and abundance. These concepts have become touchstones of Peterson's new sculptures, which contrast order, repetition, and line with a sense of active mutability and a mesmerizing aesthetic.

Sculptures by Bayne Peterson have been exhibited during the past year in Abstraction in Art Since 1950: Modern and Contemporary Selections from the Collection, group exhibition, RISD Museum, Providence, RI, Underlying System is Not Known, group exhibition, Western Exhibitions, Chicago, IL, Psychedelic Providence, group exhibition, curated by Jamilee Lacy, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Chicago, IL, and within a two-artist presentation at Kristen Lorello's booth at NADA Miami Beach in December 2016. He will be included in the two-person exhibition, "Graham McDougal + Bayne Peterson," curated by Jamilee Lacy, at Providence College Galleries, Providence, RI, opening in November 2017. Peterson was born in Palo Alto, CA, in 1984, and lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island. He received a BA from Vassar College and an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013. His work is included in the collection of the RISD Museum.
