NEW YORK, NY.- Today,
Frieze announced Ruba Katrib (Curator, SculptureCenter, USA) and Andrew Bonacina (Chief Curator, Hepworth Wakefield, UK) as the new Curatorial Advisors for its special Frame section at next years Frieze New York in May of 2018. Katrib and Bonacina will advise the exhibitors participating next spring in Frame at Frieze New York, which showcases ambitious solo artist presentations by the worlds most relevant and exciting emerging galleries, all established in 2010 or later.
Across its three fairs, Frieze brings together leading international curators to help shape the fairs dynamic and thought-provoking programs, making them agenda-setting events for the art world. The subsidized Frame section at Frieze New York features galleries established in 2010 or later presenting single artist stands that feature some of todays leading emerging artists. In 2016, the section, which was curated by Jacob Proctor (Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society at the University of Chicago) and Fabian Schöneich (Portikus, Frankfurt), featured 17 galleries from Cape Town to Cologne. were selected for Focus last year, including 2016 Frame Stand Prize winner Bridget Donahue (New York), acknowledged for the gallerys outstanding presentation by Susan Cianciolo.
Ruba Katrib is SculptureCenters Curator and is responsible for organizing exhibitions, public programs, publications, and for coordinating all aspects of programme presentation. She is also the advisor for the Focus section at Frieze London. At SculptureCenter she has produced the group shows The Eccentrics (2015), Puddle, Pothole, Portal (2014) (co-curated with Camille Henrot), Better Homes (2013), and A Disagreeable Object (2012). Recent solo shows include exhibitions with Cosima von Bonin, Aki Sasamoto, Rochelle Goldberg (all 2016), Anthea Hamilton, Gabriel Sierra, Magali Reus, Michael E. Smith, Erika Verzutti, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook (all 2015), Jumana Manna, and David Douard (both 2014). In her previous post as the Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami, she organized several solo and group exhibitions including the first museum retrospectives of Cory Arcangel and Claire Fontaine (both 2010). Katrib has contributed texts for a number of publications and periodicals including Art in America, Parkett, and cura. magazine.
Andrew Bonacina joined The Hepworth Wakefield as chief curator in 2013, playing a lead role in the artistic programming. As the former curator of International Project Space in Birmingham, Andrew built on his reputation for working with artists at a pivotal stage in their careers including Andrea Büttner, Cally Spooner, Laure Prouvost and Redmond Entwistle among others. As Director and founder of the non-profit curatorial organisation The Island, he curated projects at The Clocktower Gallery in New York (with Haroon Mirza and Hannah Sawtell), Whitstable Biennial 2012 (with Jesse Jones, Gareth Moore, Patrick Staff and Cara Tolmie) and Art Dubai Special Projects (UAE). Andrew has also realised a number of independent UK projects, most recently a major collaborative exhibition with Charles Atlas, Mika Tajima and New Humans at South London Gallery. He has held previous curatorial positions at Chisenhale Gallery and Frieze Foundation. Alongside his role in Yorkshire, he also serves as Curator at the Monsoon Art Collection, one of the major corporate contemporary art collections in the UK, and as member of the curatorial committee for Milan International Art Fair. He has written on contemporary art for Mousse and Phaidon & Taschen, among other publications.
