DALLAS, TX.- One of only 10 known surviving 1866 proof Liberty Head double eagles with the In God We Trust motto and a wide variety of half eagles minted 1834 and earlier from The Hutchinson Collection, Part II, are featured in
Heritage Auctions' April 26 - May 2 CSNS US Coins Signature Auction held in conjunction with the Central States Numismatic Society Convention in Chicago and online at www.HA.com/coins. Heritage's Platinum Night session, featuring the finest numismatic material, is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, April 27.
The Hutchinson Collection, Part II, features a wide variety of Capped Head Left half eagles. It includes of the holy grail coin of the series, the 1828/7 BD-2 half eagle. The coin presented is the only example of the variety known to exist. A mere 16 examples dated 1828 are confirmed in all varieties. This coin, graded MS63 by NGC, is certain to find a home in an important collection.
Nearly as rare, and from the same collection, is the 1833 Small Date half eagle, BD-3. Only two of the three or four examples thought to exist have been traced. This coin, graded MS61 by PCGS, is the only example known to be in private hands, and was a centerpiece of the Norweb Collection. The coin is amongst the finest 1833 half eagles, let alone one of its scarce variety. This is the first auction appearance for this variety in over 20 years.
The 1866 Proof double eagle With Motto, graded Proof-65 Cameo by NGC is certified by CAC with a gold sticker indicating that CAC believes that the coin is undergraded. At Proof-65, the coin is unsurpassed in numerical grade at the major grading services, with one other coin graded Proof-65 Deep Cameo. It is the first time an 1866 proof double eagle has been offered publicly in a decade.
The coin is being sold to help an Indiana congregation fulfill its dreams of having its own church building and avoid missing a crucial financial deadline for the project. The coin survived an attempted theft at the donor's home four years ago, and recently was given to the GracePoint Church in Valparaiso where Pastor Bob Lamb described it as "an incredible gift in God's story." Ten examples of this coin are traced, with 14-16 believed to exist. None of the others is likely to possess the combination of eye appeal and technical quality of this piece.
