Paddle8 inaugural Music Photography Sale of 2017 highlights 50 years of Pop, Punk and Hip Hop images
Glen Craig, The Beatles, All You Need Is Love, 1967. $2,800.

NEW YORK, NY.- Paddle8 presents its first Backstage Pass: Music Photography sale of 2017, live through March 14, which celebrates important musical milestones of the past 50 years. The more than 100 lots in the sale include portraits and performance photographs of the biggest stars in popular music, including The Beatles, Bob Marley, George Michael, Nirvana, Blondie, and Prince.

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of The Summer of Love and the explosive Monterey Pop Festival, an event which launched the careers of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. A key lot in Backstage Pass: Music Photography is a rare set of 10 vintage prints of Joplin, taken by the noted fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo. Photographs of Monterey Pop performers Hendrix, The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane and others are also included in the sale.

The summer of 1967 is also when The Beatles released the anthem “All You Need Is Love.” Award-winning photographer Glen Craig was at the historic live recording session at Abbey Road Studios in London, and captured the psychedelically-clad group wearing sandwich board signs spelling out the song title. Craig’s previously-unpublished photo of Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones 1969 tour is being offered as an editioned print for the first time anywhere in the Paddle8 sale.

Ten years later, 1977 is the year Punk exploded on both sides of the Atlantic, and the sale includes photos of pioneering punk artists such as the Ramones, Blondie, and Talking Heads (all live at CBGB) as well as UK acts such as the Sex Pistols and Siouxsie Sioux from Roberta Bayley, Bobby Grossman, and David Godlis. Making a notable debut in the Backstage Pass sale is Godlis’ haunting photograph of Patti Smith, captured outside the legendary New York punk club CBGB.

George Michael’s multiplatinum LP Faith was released in 1987, and Los Angeles photographer Chris Cuffaro’s signature photos of Michael from the period are included, as is British photographer David Corio’s shot of rap group Public Enemy in Hyde Park, taken at the time of their historic 1987 London concerts which would be immortalized on their breakthrough LP It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back.

The Paddle8 sale moves from the 1980s into the 1990s and beyond with images of The Smiths, The Cure, Prince, Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, Eddie Vedder, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Method Man, Daft Punk, and many more. Also included is a notable selection of rare vintage Blues, Soul, Jazz, and Rock prints by the master music photographer Jim Marshall.
