OXON HILL, MD.- John Safer went from a lucrative entrepreneurial and banking profession to a world-class sculptor who has been described as a hybrid between Georgia OKeefe and Ansel Adams. At 90-years-old his pieces have been showcased in several prominent venues including the Smithsonian Institutions National Air and Space Museum and now
MGM National Harbor a new luxury resort in his hometown of Washington D.C.
· Unity are three arcing 60-foot-tall stainless steel sculptors which is a part of MGM National Harbors Heritage Collection, a set of artwork which celebrates the diversity and spirit of the Capital region. Centered on the idea of the delineation of space, the soaring sculptures are composed of steel and a complex network of fibers to give an impression of defying gravity. From afar, the elegant towers give the illusion of hovering above the ground.
· Safer shares his artistic passion with his stepdaughter Kathryn Scott to whom he taught his trade and offered his mantle.
· He was a pilot in World War II and served as campaign manager for Eugene McCarthys presidential run in 1968. He was also an entrepreneur, real estate developer and chairman of the board for a bank in D.C.
· Safer has been making magnificent metal sculptures since the 1950s. One of his pieces Ascent is a 75-foot-tall piece sculpture that stands at the entrance of the Smithsonian Institutions National Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport.
· The U.S. Department of State sent Safers sculptures abroad to be exhibited as an example of Americas finest art.
