CLOSTER, NJ.- Baseball items from a prominent single-owner New York collector – to include a Joe DiMaggio relief plaque and two important New York Giants team-signed balls – plus art furnishings pulled from estates in the New York tri-state area and a collection of mostly American coins will be part of Sterling Associates' two session auction planned for October 19th.

Internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be accepted. Live previews will be held October 14, 17, 18 and 19, from 11 am-2:30 pm, or later hours by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call (201) 768-1140.

The auction will be conducted in two sessions, with Session 1 comprising fresh-to-the-market art and antiques from the New York metro and mid-Atlantic states region; 19th century American, European and Asian fine and decorative arts; and clocks, coins, furniture, lighting and decorative accessories. Session 2 will feature the baseball items: over 150 lots of vintage pennants, signed baseballs, autographed photos, game programs, scorecards, yearbooks, game jerseys and more.

The bronze and plaster sculptural plaque created for Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio was made at the Steinmeier Bronze factory and is said to be the original artwork for the very plaque that is now on view at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The artist was George Seaman, who made an extra one for himself – the one being sold. It is estimated to bring $4,000-$5,000.

One of the New York Giants' team-signed balls is from their World Series-winning season in 1954. The official National League ball, which has been authenticated by JSA, shows over 30 signatures, to include Willie Mays, Hoyt Wilhelm, Monte Irvin, Sal Maglie, Wes Westrum, Dusty Rhodes and Leo Durocher (stamp signature). The ball should sell for $2,200-$2,400.

The fine art category will be led by an antique dore and patina over bronze figural sculpture of a beautiful young woman on a red marble base, signed by Auguste Moreau (Fr., 1834-1917). The . The 19th century sculpture stands 26 ¾ inches tall and is expected to command $4,000-$6,000.

A circa-1900 French Sienna white marble and gilt bronze mounted “Marie Antoinette” lyre pattern clock carries a pre-sale estimate of $3,000-$5,000. The pendulum is formed as a ring of paste brilliants, floral swags and a sunburst finial. The clock is 18 ½ inches tall by 7 inches wide.

From the Asian category, an elegant 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty hongmu blackwood desk with burl tip wood panels and a glass top is estimated to bring $2,000-$3,000. The desk, made circa 1860-1880, boasts six drawers with brass hardware and stunning “crackle ice” grids below.

The coins will feature one lot consisting of an 1817 and an 1818 Coronet large cent coin, with the both sides of each coin designed by Robert Scot. The pair should hammer for $100-$300.

Returning to baseball, two lots pertaining to the Milwaukee Braves, before their relocation to Atlanta in 1966, are certain to attract keen bidder attention. One lot consists of a 1950s-era Warren Spahn team jersey (# 21) with a possible faded signature on the front; a ball signed by Spahn (winner of 363 games); and two Spahn-signed photos. The lot should hit $200-$400.

Another lot pertains to the Braves' 1957 World Series championship team and includes the 1958 team yearbook; and photos and baseballs signed by Lew Burdette, Bob Buhl, Bill Bruton, Juan Pizzaro, Felix “The Cat” Millan, Frank Torre, Red Schoendienst and Andy Pafko. Most of the items come with JSA stickers or certifications and the lot carries an estimate of $300-$500.
