HONG KONG.- Mandarin Oriental has commissioned British award-winning filmmaker, photographer and visual artist Sam Taylor-Johnson, OBE, to create a bespoke piece of art which will be prominently showcased at the Hong Kong Star Ferry poster site from 1 – 30 September, 2016.

Best known for feature films Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades of Grey, Taylor-Johnson is a BAFTA and Palme d’Or nominated film director. As a photographer and visual artist, she has had numerous significant group and solo exhibitions and is a Turner Prize nominee. She was made an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2011.

Taylor-Johnson’s large-scale artwork created for Mandarin Oriental is named “Our Fans” and is a collage which creatively showcases the brand’s unique cast of celebrity fans using photographer Mary McCartney’s striking images. This follows the success of the acclaimed collage created by artist Sir Peter Blake for the 50th anniversary of Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong in 2013.

“This was a really interesting project for me, and an extension of the work I’ve been doing recently,” said Taylor-Johnson. “The fans of Mandarin Oriental are a diverse group of extraordinarily talented individuals, including dancers, designers and actors. It was fun to look at the project like a ‘casting’ – putting Dame Helen Mirren with Morgan Freeman, and combining this with other elements from my own work.”

Displayed prominently at the Star Ferry poster site throughout the month of September, this striking work is a visual treat. “We are delighted to showcase this original piece by such a talented artist in our home town of Hong Kong,” said Jill Kluge, Mandarin Oriental’s Group Director of Brand Communications. “The collage is a celebration of the breadth and diverse nature of our celebrity fans displayed in Taylor-Johnson’s inimitable style.”

Mandarin Oriental’s ground-breaking advertising campaign. “He’s a Fan/She’s a Fan” elegantly connects Mandarin Oriental’s well-recognized symbol - the fan - with international celebrities who are loyal fans and regular visitors to the Group’s hotels. With stunning photography and videography created by the late and great celebrity photographer Patrick Lichfield, and more recently the award-winning photographer, Mary McCartney, the campaign currently features 29 international personalities. In appreciation of their support and participation in the campaign, Mandarin Oriental makes a donation to each celebrity’s individual choice of charity.
