STOCKHOLM.- In this exhibition, one of Sweden’s most influential designers presents a personal selection of the projects and commissions she has worked on, with commentary in the form of sketches, videos and captions. The exhibition is coproduced with Vandalorum in Vrnamo, where it will go on show this autumn.
Meet Ingegerd Rman, one of Sweden’s most influential designers. Not only a designer, but also a ceramicist, Rman is insatiably curious and always ready to take on new challenges. Almost invariably, she embarks on new projects to address a personal need. Clear glass and simple, self-evident design have effectively become her hallmark. Likewise the black – or occasionally white – ceramics, turned in her own workshop in Skne or produced in larger quantities by a manufacturer.
Being true to your own design aesthetic, regardless of trends, is an ability that requires a high degree of integrity and at least as much attentiveness, plus an irrepressible desire to challenge yourself in ways that broaden your horizons and enrich you. Refining and developing the design of a glass, a decanter or a bowl, depending specifically on its intended function in the present context, calls for equal parts perceptiveness and ability to relish a challenge.
“I enjoy listening, conversing and learning. When you work in such close partnership, you develop a special sense of trust. That gives me the ability to see and think differently, which has strongly influenced my own work,” says Rman.
In the exhibition, Rman presents a personal selection of her projects and commissions, represented by over 200 pieces in glass, ceramic, wood and natural fibre, displayed on 24 tables. Through sketches, videos and captions, she provides a commentary on the challenges involved and the projects she has undertaken for Swedish and international manufacturers. The exhibition features several new projects and a selection of past work for large and small clients, as well as some of Rman’s collaborations with the architect Gert Wingrdh, the first of which was the House of Sweden in Washington, DC, in 2008.

Nationalmuseum and the Vandalorum art museum in Vrnamo, where it will be on show from 3 September to 27 November 2016. Ingegerd Rman has been in the news recently with her Viktigt collection for Ikea, the ongoing filming of a documentary to air on Swedish television this autumn, her collaboration with Gert Wingrdh on the extension of the Liljevalchs art gallery in Stockholm, and the Japanese Arita 2016 project currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Ingegerd Rman is on show at Nationalmuseum Design, located inside Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm, from 3 June to 14 August 2016.
