MEXICO CITY.- The great diversity of Latin American artistic expressions attracts some of the most passionate collectors in the world, and Mexico City is one of the most important focal points for this market.
For its Latin American Art Auction, taking place on May 19th 2016 in Mexico City,
Morton Subastas is featuring 222 works by exceptional modern and contemporary masters; those who have shaped the artistic landscape in Mexico and other Latin American regions, such as Peru, Cuba, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Guatemala, Venezuela and Uruguay.
Among the highlights of the sale there is a drawing made by David Alfaro Siqueiros in 1947, Aurora de México. After the artist was back from a three-year long exile due to his involvement in León Trotskys attempt of murder, he created this artwork: a highly symbolic composition that depicts the Mexican motherland, represented by a magnificently sculptural young woman, embracing a group of oil towers.
The model for this work was Angélica Arenal Siqueiros, the artists wife. The Aurora was conceived for a mural that was never executed; thats why the lower section of the composition shows a family admiring it on a hypothetical wall.
There is also a very special large format painting by Roberto Montenegro, made by the artist on occasion of the 10th anniversary of Teatro de los Insurgentes, one of the most historic and beloved theaters in Mexico City. This is the first time that this painting is available to the public.
Theres also a strong presence of Oaxacan artists through a remarkable folding screen painted by Rodolfo Morales, as well as pieces by Francisco Toledo, Rufino Tamayo and Rodolfo Nieto. Contemporary artists of international relevance, such as Gabriel Orozco, Aldo Chaparro and Carlos Amorales, are also among the highlights of the selection.
The exhibition prior to the auction will be open to the public from May 15th to May 18th 2016 in the saleroom located at Club Naval Norte, Mexico City.
