NEW YORK, NY.- Joan B Mirviss Ltd will open the exhibition, Remembering Katô Yasukage (1964-2012): Ceramic Works from the Katô Family Collection, opening at the 62nd annual Winter Antiques Show in the historic Park Avenue Armory. This year, the fair has officially lifted its date restrictions for contemporary artworks, allowing the gallery to not only exhibit Katô Yasukage's astounding artwork, but also feature contemporary ceramists for the first time.
Katō Yasukage, the fourteenth generation in an ancestry of ceramists, is renowned for his dramatic, sculpted vessels adorned with rich, copper-green oribe and orange-peel textured shino glazes. Despite his untimely death, Katō solidified his place as one of the foremost talents, not only within his own lineage, but also throughout Japan. We are extremely grateful to the artist's mother, Katō Wakako, who generously provided these artworks from the family collection.
In addition to Katō's work, the gallery will also display a carefully curated selection of paintings, prints and ceramic artworks. Highlights include ukiyo-e prints by celebrated artists, KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI, KAWASE HASUI, KEISAI EISEN, and UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE, a painting of a majestically seated tiger by KISHI CHIKUDÔ and a masterful pair of paintings depicting morning glories and gourds by SUZUKI KIITSU. Additionally, we will showcase a variety of superb ceramic artworks by HAMADA SHÔJI, KAWAI KANJIRÔ, KITAÔJI ROSANJIN, KONDÔ YUTAKA, MIYASHITA ZENJI, MORINO TAIMEI, SHIMIZU UICHI, SUZUKI OSAMU, and YAMADA HIKARU, to name a few.
The show will be open to the public from Friday, January 22nd through Sunday, January 31st. The hours are noted below for your convenience. We very much hope that you will be able to attend and look forward to welcoming you to our usual booth, #7, located on the south aisle.
