Treadway Toomey Auctions will sell nearly 900 lots of Arts & Crafts, Fine Art, and Modern Design

OAK PARK, ILL.- The John Toomey Gallery in association with Treadway Gallery, will present its final auction of the year Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. This four-session auction will begin with an Arts & Crafts session, featuring furniture by Gustav Stickley, Tiffany lighting, Teco and Rookwood pottery, and architect-designed furniture by Frank Lloyd Wright and Greene & Greene. Estimates in this session range from a few hundred dollars up to a Tiffany Peony table lamp estimated at $55,000-$75,000.

The Fine Art session will begin with an oil painting by Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie titled “Trapped” and estimated at $6,000-$8,000. Treadway Toomey Auctions currently holds the record auction record for the artist, with “The Owl Tamer” selling for $39,650 just last year. Other notable works in this session include a watercolor by Joseph Yoakum, an oil painting on wood construction by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam, and a woven tapestry done after famed sculptor Alexander Calder.

The third session offers an important grouping of African American fine art, with 20th century works in various mediums, including paintings, prints, sculpture, collage, assemblage, and photographs. A highlight of this session is a major work titled Entombment by Bob Thompson. The artist’s work has been the subject of museum shows and is owned by private collectors and institutions alike. The oil on board, depicting colorful abstracted figures, is expected reach $60,000-$80,000.

The sale will conclude with a Modern Design session, which begins with two works by Val Bertoia, son of famed sculptor and furniture designer, each estimated at $10,000-15,000. Other Modern Design offered for sale will include a Max Goltschalk lounge chair and ottoman with original leather, an Marcello Fantoni vase in glazed earthenware, and several examples of Herman Miller furniture.

Preview exhibition for this auction is open to the public and will be held at the John Toomey Gallery, 818 North Boulevard, Oak Park, Ill., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. December 1-4, with extended hours on December 3 until 7 p.m.
