DUBLIN.- This sale Includes a terrific lineup of sports collectibles including the oldest rugby international shirt extant - 1899 Ireland, a 1957 Manchester United v Shamrock Rovers football signed by the Busby Babes. The collections of two legendary rock and pop promoters - Pat Egan of Ireland and Jordi Tarda of Catalan - include material from over 150 stars such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Madonna, Nirvana, Thin Lizzy, U2, etc. Cinema memorabilia include objects connected to Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, Laurel and Hardy, and many others, as well as a great collection of James Bond film posters.
A very important piece of Irish soccer memorabilia
When Shamrock Rovers won the League of Ireland in 1957 they had extra cause for celebration; they were the first Irish club to qualify for the European Cup, the fore-runner of the Champions League. In the first round they were drawn against Manchester United, managed by Matt Busby who had built a team of exciting young players, the famous Busbys Babes that swept all before them.
Shamrock Rovers hosted Manchester United at home in Milltown for the first leg and lost 6-0. They travelled to Old Trafford for the 2nd leg on 2nd, October 1957. Rovers played magnificently but lost 3-2. Following the match a member of the team was presented with a football signed by the Manchester United team and management.
Busbys Babes went on to win the second round of the Cup against Dukla Prague and progressed to meet Red Star Belgrade in the third round. It was while returning to England from the away leg against Red Star Belgrade, in February 1958, that the teams plane crashed after a refuelling stop in Munich. Tragically, eight of the players died as a result of the crash (seven of whom had signed this football). Despite this loss Manchester United reached the final of the European Cup.
The ball is signed by Matt Busby, Geoff Bent, Johnny Berry, Roger Byrne, Jackie Blanchflower, Joe Carolan, Bobby Charlton, Jack Crompton, Duncan Edwards, Ian Greaves, Mark Jones, Noel McFarlane, David Pegg, Albert Scanlon, Tommy Taylor, Liam Whelan.
The football is consigned by a descendant of a Shamrock Rovers team-member. Lot 360, estimate 6,000-8,000.
The oldest Irish international rugby jersey in the world
After 116 years it has faded to a biscuit colour from its original green but the badge is unmistakeably Irish, albeit with four shamrocks rather than the typical three. The player's name, " W.G. Byron" is handwritten in ink on the maker's label (Lynch of Dublin). It is the earliest international rugby shirt to be offered at auction and a fantastic piece of Irish and international rugby union history.
William (Billy) Grant Byron was born in Londonderry on 1 July 1876 and died there in December 1961. He was a graduate of Edinburgh University and made a career as an accountant. Byron served as an officer in the Royal Irish Rifles in World War I. He played rugby for Derry, Edinburgh University, and North of Ireland. He won eleven caps for Ireland - v. England in 1896, 1897, 1898 and 1899; v. Scotland in 1896, 1897, 1898 and 1899; v Wales in 1897, 1898 and 1899.
1899 saw Ireland's second Triple Crown victory, a feat not to be repeated until 1948 - included in this lot is a copy of a press photograph of Billy Byron with some of the Irish team including Karl Mullen at Cardiff before the clinching of the Triple Crown in 1948, reminiscent of Jack Kyle and Brian ODriscoll in the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff in 2009.
The market for rugby memorabillia is very hot at the moment with an 1904 New Zealand jersey selling for STG£180,000 at auction in October. Lot 398, estimate: 25,000-30,000.
