COLUMBUS, OH.- The Columbus Museum of Art has promoted Tyler Cann to the position of Curator of Contemporary Art. Cann joined CMA in 2013 as the Museum’s Associate Curator of Contemporary Art. During his time at the Museum he has organized several exhibitions including In __ We Trust: Art and Money, a group show featuring 26 artists and collectives from diverse international backgrounds whose work addresses the nature of money and its complex relationship to art.

Cann has guided the growth of the Museum’s contemporary art collection. CMA has recently added works by Jeppe Hein, Josiah McElheny, Trevor Paglen, and Susan Philipsz. As the Museum prepares to open its new wing in October, Cann is focused on the reinstallation of CMA’s permanent and the inaugural special exhibitions that will be featured in the new space: Imperfections By Chance: Paul Feeley Retrospective, 1954–1966, a retrospective of the artist Paul Feeley, developed in partnership with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, and Keeping Pace: Eva Glimcher and Pace/Columbus, an exhibition focused on the legacy of Pace Gallery in Columbus.

“Tyler has invigorated our Contemporary Art program,” said CMA Executive Director Nannette Maciejunes. “His expertise has helped us strategically acquire new works that have strengthened our collection and helped raise CMA’s profile.

“I’m so grateful for the support that contemporary art has received at CMA, both from within the Museum, and from the community that surrounds it,” said Cann.

Previously, Cann was curator at Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, where he worked with artists such as Sarah Browne, Boyd & Evans, and Bedwyr Williams. Cann was also a curator at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Zealand, where he developed numerous research-based exhibitions on the artist and experimental filmmaker Len Lye. These include Chronosome, The Cosmic Archive, All Souls Carnival, and, with Mercedes Vicente, Points of Contact: Jim Allen, Len Lye and Hélio Oiticica.
