AMSTERDAM.- The fourth edition of Amsterdam Art Weekend, one of the most important art events of Amsterdam, takes place during the last weekend of November - not coincidentally the same weekend the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten opens its doors to the public. For four days, the discovery of young talent takes center stage as Amsterdam presents itself as an internationally oriented meeting place for art professionals, collectors, artists and enthusiasts alike. A carefully curated program encompasses more than 90 specially programmed exhibitions, screenings, performances and conversations, including exceptional collaborations between different participants. The more than 50 participating galleries, project spaces, museums and institutes, spread all across the city, function together as a podium for the weekend. An extensive Professionals Program, presented in collaboration with the participating venues, acts as an extension to the public program and gives professionals the opportunity to build on their networks. Amsterdam Art Weekend is initiated and coordinated by the nonprofit organization Amsterdam Art.

A selection from the program
Amsterdam Art Weekend and RijksakademieOPEN will start together with a joint festive opening, bringing together the Dutch capital’s cultural field and leading figures of the international art world. With 46 important artists from all over the world presenting their work, the RijksakademieOPEN offers an overview of the latest trends and developments in contemporary art. Galleries will organize exhibitions in their own spaces, giving the opportunity to acquire art works. The Stedelijk Museum will open a solo exhibition of Isa Genzken and organizes a symposium to reflect on the exhibition ‘A Year at the Stedelijk’ by Tino Sehgal. In collaboration with IDFA, the program ‘Amsterdam Art Weekend at IDFA’ will take place at EYE. This series of screenings will consist of work by residents and alumni of De Ateliers and the Rijksakademie as well as that of artists from the participating galleries. De Ateliers will present a solo exhibition of the former participant Paloma Polo. De Appel arts center will organize a festive program to celebrate its 40 year anniversary. SMBA and De Balie are cooperating in the planning of debates about current themes in contemporary art. The Oude Kerk will stage a program of performances that respond to the Germaine Kruip exhibition that will be on view at the same time. The performance program of Amsterdam Art Weekend is further expanded upon by the participating project spaces. The Head Office of Manifesta, the travelling European Biennial for contemporary visual arts, will show a selection of works by Christian Jankowski, artist and curator of Manifesta 11.

Foundation Amsterdam Art
The foundation Amsterdam Art aims to highlight the strength of Amsterdam in the field of contemporary art. To achieve this, Amsterdam Art represents and promotes the very best that the city has to offer. Due to the organization’s thorough knowledge of Amsterdam’s cultural scene, it is known among both art lovers and professionals as a solid guide and an inexhaustible source of information. To continuously ensure high quality, Amsterdam Art works with a list of carefully selected participants – together consisting in over 50 renowned podiums for arts and culture. The role of Amsterdam Art is hereby to function as the umbrella organization of these institutions and encourage the realization of fruitful collaborations between them. Due to its binding capacity, the organization creates a unique and indispensable network within the contemporary art world, both locally and internationally.

In order to represent and promote the selected art and cultural spaces, Amsterdam Art makes use of various channels of communication. The Amsterdam Art website (amsterdamart.com) provides useful and up-to-date information about current and upcoming exhibitions and special events. The Amsterdam Art Calendar is printed and distributed on a bimonthly basis and freely available at the participating venues. For the benefit of its partners, the organization furthermore curates gallery tours to the arts and culture podiums it collaborates with. Last but not least, Amsterdam Art is the initiator and organizer of the annual Amsterdam Art Weekend.
