In the auction From Brueghel to Makovsky: Old Masters & 19th Century Paintings on June 23, paintings from well-known Old Masters such as Jan Brueghel the Younger, Claes Molenaer, Jacob Toorenvliet and Frany Ykens will go under the hammer. The 19th century is represented with outstanding works of Franz Roubaud, Country Boys from Nikolaj Bogdanov-Belsky, an impressive Caucasian landscape of Lev Lagorio and a blooming garden scene from Konstantin Makovsky. Particularly noteworthy are the large number of premium-quality portraits, for example from Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, who is also highly esteemed in the US. The painting stems from the family of the portrayed Friedrich W. Huetz, who was a friend of the artist. As indicated by a small inscription on the canvas, the painting was the result of a lost bet that had been placed between Leutze and Huetz.
On June 24, the auction From Monet to Klee: Masterworks of Impressionist & Modern Art will present great masters of Modern art, such as Max Liebermann, Emil Nolde, Karl Hofer, Georges Grosz, Cuno Amiet, Paul Klee and Claude Monet.
One outstanding highlight in this auction is the watercolor Côte de Provence 5 by Paul Klee (1879-1940), one of the most important Swiss painters and printmakers of the 20th century. This work was created during a journey in 1927, when Klee travelled from Switzerland to Provence and Corsica. During his travels he created numerous illustrations of southern coastal cities, including subjects of sailing boats and landscapes that are characterized by an abstract formal language and the use of bright colors. Paul Klee made seven different versions of the subjects presented here, titled Côtes de Provence. Inspired by constructivist art, with which he came in touch during his time at the Bauhaus from 1920 to 1931, his work became increasingly abstract and geometrical. This influence is also visible in this watercolor, which is listed in the catalogue raisonée and comes from a private collection in Monaco. The starting price is 160,000.
Another highlight is the painting 'L'Enfant à la tasse, portrait de Jean Monet' by Claude Monet (1840-1926). The work shows an intimate childrens portrait of Monets 3-year-old son Jean. It is one of the artists early works, characterized by the realistic depiction, with which he followed his great role model Edouard Manet. The portrait was painted in 1868, four years before his most famous work Impression soleil levant would become eponymous for the Impressionist style. The painting comes from an American private collection and once belonged to the famous Henderson collection, which also comprised masterpieces of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In 2013, the portrait was available for sale for US $1,450,000 at the launch of the Amazon Fine Art section, but remained unsold. Now, Auctionata offers the painting with an attractive starting price of 200,000.
Another noteworthy work in the auction is In die Nacht hinein (into the night) from Marianne von Werefkin (1860-1938), depicting a scene of Shakespeares King Lear in Werefkins typical magical and symbolic style of painting. In addition, several works of the Dutch painter and architect Johan Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978) will be offered, such as a very detailed, nearly life-size drawing of an Indonesian lady. This is the first time that a work of the artist will be offered on the German auction market.
Subsequently, the auction Blue Chips: Post-War & Contemporary Art on June 25, will conclude with very promising artworks of famous post-war and contemporary artists. Among the auction highlights are works of the British painter David Hockney, the Chinese multimedia artist Shu Yong and the German figurative painter Horst Antes. The most outstanding piece is a large green vinylic tempera on relief-canvas by the Italian artist Agostino Bonalumi, which will be called with a starting price of 40,000.
