CINCINNATI, OH.- The Cincinnati Art Museum announced the addition of a new contemporary gallery that celebrates the acquisition of the highly-regarded Nancy and David Wolf Collection. Located on the Museum’s second-floor ambulatory, this gallery now displays approximately 35 contemporary masterworks in ceramics, glass and wood. This new space, which will change periodically to feature a variety of seminal works from the Wolf Collection, is free and open to the general public.

In the gallery, visitors will discover the creative achievements of contemporary artists who have used glass, wood and ceramics in extraordinary ways to address a multitude of contemporary ideas and subjects. These artworks, ranging from miniature to monumental in scale, represent the creative talents of artists from three continents. Many of the artists represented are celebrated as trailblazers and credited with leading us to the multifaceted contemporary art scene of today, which values the use of any and all media to convey power, passion, and ideas.

Since 2009, Cincinnatians Nancy and David Wolf have gifted over 250 works from their nationally-recognized collection of contemporary craft to the Art Museum. The remainder of their collection is a promised bequest. The Wolf’s generous contribution has positioned the Cincinnati Art Museum as one of the foremost centers for the study and enjoyment of contemporary craft.

The new gallery presently includes, among many others, works by Harvey Littleton, William Morris, Therman Statom, Jaroslava Brychtová and Stanislav Libenský in glass; Philip Moulthrop, David Ellsworth and Michael Mode in wood; and Rudy Autio, Viola Frey, and Akio Takamori in ceramics.

Nancy and David Wolf have been collecting contemporary art for nearly 40 years. In 2006, they were named among “America’s Top 100 Collectors” by Art and Antiques Magazine. They have been long-time and generous supporters of the Cincinnati Art Museum. Prior to 2009, the Wolfs donated 16 pieces of contemporary glass to the CAM collection and contributed to the acquisition of Dale Chihuly’s Rio Delle Torreselle Chandelier (1996). The Art Museum presented a special exhibition entitled Outside the Ordinary (with catalogue) in 2009 which featured selections from the Wolf’s collection. Since that time, the Wolfs have donated over 250 works of art to the Cincinnati Art Museum, in addition to a large endowment for the care of the collection, and their extensive library of books, periodicals, pamphlets and files pertaining to their collection. These important scholarly resources will be available to researchers and academics at The Art Museum’s Mary R. Schiff Library and Archives.
