DeCordova announces new Associate Curator: Sarah Montross
Montross is currently the Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Curatorial Fellow at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, Maine.

LINCOLN, MASS.- DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum announces that after a thorough search, the institution has hired Sarah Montross to serve as Associate Curator, effective June 2015. Montross is currently the Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Curatorial Fellow at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, Maine. She brings to deCordova extensive experience, having held positions at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and Museum of Modern Art, New York, as well as teaching jobs at New York University and Hunter College, New York.

Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs Jennifer Gross, who led the search committee, notes: “I am thrilled to welcome Sarah and keenly anticipate how our curatorial programming will be enriched by the breadth and depth of her experience and knowledge.” Says recently-appointed Executive Director John Ravenal: “Sarah's expertise in international contemporary art is a welcome addition to our already strong curatorial department. We are delighted to welcome her to deCordova and look forward to introducing her to the Boston area community.”

During the course of her three-year fellowship at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Montross curated the institution’s current exhibition Past Futures: Science Fiction, Space Travel and Postwar Art of the Americas and edited the accompanying catalogue co-published with MIT Press. She has organized numerous exhibitions with Bowdoin faculty, including Breakthrough: Work by Contemporary Chinese Women Artists and the digital exhibition Fifty Years Later: The Portrayal of the Negro in American Painting. Montross also curates for a private photography collection in New York City. A graduate of Vassar College, Montross earned her MA and PhD degrees from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, where her focus was Modern and Contemporary art of the Americas.

Montross expresses great enthusiasm about her transition to deCordova: “It is a true privilege to join deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and to have the opportunity to build upon the institution’s esteemed history of pioneering contemporary art exhibitions and programs.”
